Occasionally I accidently plug my rifle barrel by slipping and shoving it in the dirt,mud or snow.With no way to clear it, I have to go back to the truck or home and get a rod thru it.Not very convenient. I have since start using a live primed case to blow it clean, seem to do the job and does not make very much noise. Anyone else got any better ideas???

i just heard a story of a buddy that clogged his with snow while following a wounded coyote. he had heard that pissing on the barrel would warm it up so he tried it. it was super cold out. he got his dick to close to the barrel while pissing and got the tip froze to the barrel. [Eek!]

tore off a small bit of hide pulling away [Eek!]

the primed case is a great idea [Wink]

Since I use ARs, I have a nice compartment in the butt stock where I keep a 4" piece of brass rod and a bore snake. I use the brass rod to push the mud out and the bore snake to clean it. The Primed case idea would work well also.

I keep my muzzle covered wiith a piece of electrical tape at all times while hunting. Along with keeping snow, dirt, and grit out, tape also give a thin layer of protection from dinging the crown. If a shot is fired, a new piece goes on.

And, I seldom do a walkabout, hunting predators. And, I don't hunt snow very much and there is little else that would plug the barrel. I have used the cleaning rod to punch out a stuck case, another rare occurrence.

One time, pursuing pronghorn, my buddy pole vaulted THREE times traversing this wide arroyo during the sneak. Three different times, we had to waste our thermos of black coffee to clear the snow and some mud with it. And, that, friends, is why I have carried a cleaning rod, ever since.

If a plug should occur while deer hunting, which is more likely because I don't often get miles from the truck hunting predators. But, if it happens in that case, I would be out of luck, short of returning to the vehicle. And, like many others, I usually have a second rifle, maybe more?

edit: PS I don't think I buy that story about tearing off a bit of hide? Wouldn't a friend blow on it for him? It may not be funny, but it would be ridiculous, nonetheless. I don't believe it.

Yeah......that might help? You know what? I grew up in Minnesota and a kid learns very young to keep his tongue away from a steel pole. Now, we have an adult that makes a mistake like that? Okay, I think I will have to wait for the photos.

Once had to pluck cactus out of a huntin partners backside. Still haven't collected all the whiskey promised for that service. Amazing what you can negotiate when you have the only tweezers within 30 miles.

Ditto to Lonnie: tape the barrel. I have never been able to detect any change in impact from taping. I use precut rounds the diameter of the muzzle with a tapering tail of tape down each side. Stick several spare pieces of tape on the buttstock somewhere. Saves a lot of grief when walking through snow laden limbs, tamarack needle showers, etc. not to mention mud.

A good field cleaning item is a length of weedeater line with a loop on one end and a few pieces of cleaning cloth. Fits in a small ziploc or snuff can.

A couple of years ago I fell in a beaver pond over my head while stalking a moose, and despite my taped muzzle, got some fine liquid mud into the barrel via the action. I could drop a length of parachute cord through from the action end, so did that. Then cut the cord, tied a clump of knots larger than .30 and pulled it through and out the muzzle. All this while within 80 yards of the moose, which I shot two minutes later. No time to go to a vehicle.

Also whittled a stick to unplug a barrel while hiding from a bull elk, which I shot as soon as the barrel was clear. Years ago.
