This is my youngest son, Grant, he is 10 yrs old. He killed this buck Saturday afternoon. A very nice 9 point. He was shooting my, now his after he took it away from me, 25-06 Ackley Improved. He made a very impressive shot. It was right at 250 yards and he dropped him in his tracks. I could not be any happier. I have told a lot of you on forums and in person, and I mean it. As much as I love to hunt, whether it be calling predators or hunting deer or other big game, I would be satisfied to never pull the trigger again if I could experience the joy and excitement of a young person or anyone else that has never experienced it before. That hug I got after the deer dropped was worth more to me than a world record ever would be. I think the smile on his face in this picture says it all. There is nothing else like it to me. Good job Grant!

Good job, Grant!
Andy, with your shoulder problems, you probably should go back to that wimpy 17? At least Grant will USE a 25'06Ackley! Did you cut the stock, or what?
Good hunting. LB

LB, no, I didnt cut the stock. He shot it as it came. It is just a stock Rem 700 ADL that I took to my smith as soon as I got it. He, like most Rems now days, had to square the bolt face, true the action and I had it Ackley Improved, pillar bedded and got a trigger job, I think its about 3 lb or so. I stuck a Nikon 3x9 on it and it was my deer rifle, until my son wanted to trade my 300 Win Mag for his CZ 6.5x55 and I love that light kicker, so its been kind of a safe queen for a couple years, except when Jason would come down from Nebraska and he used it. Now Grant has claimed it. LOL
Honestly, as good as that gun shoots both 100 gr deer bullets and 75 gr V Max, I would load the latter and use nothing else for a coyote rifle if I were a contest hunter. However, I am not a contest hunter and I like to pull fur. So, I will stick with the 204 Ruger. With a V Max, that damn thing will tear them in half at a long way out there. And very accurate and not overly heavy. So if anchoring the coyote was the only goal, I dont know how it could get any better.
He had a good rest and said it didnt even kick. LOL He wouldnt have felt a BMG. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Nice buck Grant! Nice shooting too!
Andy, I totally agree with you on being part of someone getting their "first" of anything while hunting, and even more so when it is your own son. Watching my son get his firsts meant more than anything I've ever killed. I'm not ashamed to admit that I felt the tears of joy welling up in my eyes when he killed his first big animal.

Lonny, I know what you mean. I have been blessed to have gotten the opportunity to go through it with both boys multiple times on deer, turkey, coyotes and trapping. And, I have taken other kids that wanted to hunt and helped them get their firsts. I just love that feeling. You know how proud they are and excited and it is just, well, words cant describe it.
We got to keep it going. If we dont teach our kids to do this stuff, it will go away someday.

I'm with you, Andy! We measure ourselves by what we do for others, by what we pass on to our children. Decades from now, when we are dead and buried, he will be the skilled hunter, the 'Andy' of his time, and will have fond memories of hunts with his dad! ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

There is nothing like it. I helped Austin get many firsts, and even the ones that followed that I was fortunate enough to be part of were just as good. Taught them both how to catch coyote, fox, bobcat, beaver, coon and other furbearers. Last winter was a payoff. They trapped three bobcats, the biggest red fox I have ever seen, several beaver and coons while I was laid up. Makes you proud they learn it, not just do it.
Sadly, Austin has outgrown me. He is as good or better than I am. Only thing he has left to learn is patience for big bucks. He kills what comes, and thats ok. I realize now that Grant is 10 and I better enjoy the next few years before he outgrows me too.
BTW, the vote yall won for Austin, he goes turkey hunting in IL in January for the show. And, he got some pics emailed the other day from them of the farm they got picked out for whoever wins the December vote. WOW! I hope we can come together again and help him win that one. There are some whoppers in that area. I think he will have patience there. And he is a hell of a bow shot. One of those bruisers, should he win it, come by his stand, they have problems.
