Had an interesting experience today. Jim Zumbo has a benefit deal for wounded veterans to go on a hunting trip and I donated some antelope hunts. We had 4 of them today and all went well, we killed 4 nice antelope. But it puts a whole new perspective on things to take these guys hunting and see what they have suffered. Basically 4 really nice kids that have been blown to shit or shot to shit over there. Two were in chairs and 2 had prostetic legs that they could walk on. It's an eye opening experience, to see with your own eyes what they have given in service to this country. I'll try to post some pics tommorrow.

Cal, thanks for helping those true heroes out. I know God will bless you for doing so. We surely owe them more than we could ever repay.

Thank you for caring and doing what you did for those soldiers, Cal. I'm sure they enjoyed the hunt and will remember it for a long time. I hope they accept their disability and learn to live with it. I'm sure it is tough, but they survived and they still have a life to live, knowing that other comrades in arms paid the ultimate price.
Good hunting. LB

I don't think there are many better projects than that Cal!!!
Thank you for guiding these guys!
This is one project all hunters should embrace. It not only gives these brave soldiers a Thank You but also instills a new confidence in them to go on with their lives.
I look forward to your pics and stories and to hearing about more in the future.

Thats great Cal! I live near Ft Leonard Wood and unless you have seen it, it really doesnt hit home how much these guys do give. Taking them hunting shows just how much class you do have. Thanks.

Very nice, Cal. Just yesterday, I spent most of a couple hours visiting with Kyle, my neighbor down the street. He just retired from the Army at 25 years old with three belly buttons due to a volley of AK47 rounds that came through the bottomside of a blackhawk helo he was riding in after being extracted from a sniper detail in Iraq. He was severely wounded and watched two of his buddies die on either side of him in that incident. Both the emotional and physical scars are more than any of us can appreciate firsthand. He's a great guy - just as I am sure the ones you hunted with are - and he deserves whatever we, as a country, can give him to get him back into the business of taking care of himself. I've said it any times her that these guys are so damned impressive with their professionalism and class. Thanks for helping them out.

Thanks Cal, Sorta made you feel good inside didn't it. Zumbo screwed up a couple years ago, but I think he has redeemed himself. I appreciate what he is doing also.

South Dakota has a similar one-day pheasant hunt for disabled hunters. This will be the 6th year of this hunt and I have been fortunate to have participated each year. The hunt has involved 15-18 hunters each year and around 40-50 volunteers that walk the cover areas to flush the birds with their dogs for the hunters posting at the end of the fields. Other volunteers transport the hunters with four wheelers and trailers to the various hunting areas. We have been fortunate to harvest 30-40 pheasants each year of the hunts. For many of the hunters, this is the only hunt they get to partake in each year. Other hunters like myself in a wheelchair, are very much appreciative to the landowner and volunteers that have given us the opportunity to participate in such a annual hunt.

It is a good thing to help out your fellow man, particularly those who have sacrificed greatly on behalf of their country and their countrymen.
We are both proud of them for their great courage, sacrifice, and service, and no less proud of you for service to them on behalf of their country.
God bless all of you.

Fine job Cal, your a true ambassador to our fraternity; doing, what we all wish we could do for them.
The amazing thing to me is, the number of follow-up shows Ive seen concernng soldiers that have lost legs, working so hard to get back in shape, so they can get back there to help their unit....can you imagine that kind of conviction?
Posted by Lonny (Member # 19) on October 13, 2010, 03:44 PM:
Mighty admirable of you to do that for those boys.
As far as what AZ said about conviction, I was asking a guy the other day how his son was doing after losing a couple legs in Iraq. He said pretty well considering the situation, but as a parent he was stressing a bit because his other son who is a senior in high school plans on joining the Marines as soon as he graduates.
