Is it just me, or do folks in the Eastern U.S. complain more?

Is 100 degrees hotter in New Jersey than in Kansas or Arizona? Is cold colder in New York than in Montana or Wyoming?

I am confused here--we have 10 days over 100 degrees here in Kansas and it is not mentioned, however, heaven forbid the mercury hits 100 in Newark, and the sky is falling!!

Enlighten me...

That was mentioned today at lunch. The way the media was talking, it is necessary back east to wrap yourself in wet towels, super hydrate, and carry an emergency beacon just to go get the mail from the mailbox. Give me a break.

If memory serves me correctly, Boise Idaho, hit 110 degrees in July of both 2002 & 2003.

I'm sure on the 110 part, might have been 2003 & 2004 though.

Don't recall much national attenion on that one ?

do y'all run 100 degrees at 98% humidity? there is a difference. I don't complain but I'm smart enough to know its hot.
Use to hunt with a guy from alaska, he could stand -40° up there, at +20° in wv he would just shut down from the cold, he said its completely different.

Fox is all I watch. Its the weather that pisses me off. Its been hot as hell here and most everywhere else, but ole Janice Dean is not worried about anywhere but Fucking NYC.

I guess when I say NYC, I mean that whole cluster of blue states that run for several hundred miles up and down that side of the US. All just a bunch of rats piled up on top of each other.

Brad, Im still waiting on your vote, btw. Can I be an Okie yet?

Oh, and Brad, probably not the best time to tell you this, but I talked to Dad and he said that the fella I used to talk to at the feedlot isnt there anymore and the owner he dealt with has thrown in with 4 other big lots and its some kind of conglomerate. He probably wouldnt let us hunt anymore.

I dont think its far enough south for you anyway? I thought it was til I looked at the map. Its been a long time since I have been there.

Sorry dude.

You're well represented on FOX news, Andy. Steve Doocy on Fox and Friends is from right here in Abilene. His sister Lisa used to be my brother's office manager, his other sister runs a small bistro-like cafe downtown, and I see his dad around downtown all the time. and yes, there's a difference. My uncle from down around Cortez, CO can do as was said, shirt sleeves when their temp is down around ten. Hits forty around here and he is miserable. My wife was raised in Laurel, Montana. Told me she loved the cold when we were first dating. Then, she endured her first Kansas winter. She knows the difference now. It is the humidity. Miserable here today - 85 degrees and nearly 80% humidity. Air you can wear.

It is powerful hot, even here, where the 49th parrallel meets salt water west. It must be close to 90, with moderate humidity which makes it worse. It's supposed to get hotter tomorrow. Photo off of my deck a few minutes ago, taken after reading this thread.

In an hour's drive we can be in the snow on that mountain, any day of the year.

Well, that's sort of interesting. No, not the wind chill @110¤, it's the perceived cold, depending on where you happen to be, at any given time.

Case in point. I grew up in Minneesota, (to a point) and routinely walked a mile and a half to school, as a lad at 25below zero. But, hunting all night in northern Nevada, I am pretty sure it doesn't get more than about zero, most of the time, yet it's bone chilling cold. 'Splain that to me, Loco?

Good hunting. LB

I remember growing up on the Coast in Virginia as a child the the weather never bothered me. However, I also remember, as an adult, summers when the temperature and humidity were even. My last few winters in VA were bone chilling due to the humidity and the wind blowing off the river. As they say here in Arizona . . . "it's a dry heat". We may be in the 100s from mid-May through September but, even during monsoons, the humidity doesn't reach the same as the temp. I do believe that the humidity factor has a lot to do with the heat/cold. Also, there are folks who don't have air conditioners to keep cool. As an Arizonan, it's drilled into you that, particularly in the summer, you have to stay hydrated. Most East Coasters must not know that. After all, we are talking about NY. [Wink]

Humidity most certainly is a big factor.

When I lived in the SoCal high desert, we were using what we called a swamp cooler. Being raised in Missouri, I never heard of such a thing. I couldn't imagine putting humidity into the air in the summer, using an evaporation cooler and such.

Now-a-days, When I look at my AC's condensate drain just pouring out water here during the summer, I almost try to think of ways to collect it in a cistern or something to water the grass instead of just having it go down the floordrain. But I'm not that "green" yet.

Go to SW Colorado and look at every house in rural areas. All of them have a swamp cooler mounted on the roof. They're still around.

Last time I was there was about five years ago. I really need to get back. They own a canyon called Dawson's Canyon just off Yellowjacket Canyon and, from their front porch, you can see the backside of Mesa Verde about five miles away. They spend a lot of time over in Delores.

I spent a year one month in Misouri in the summer in West Plains and in KC Mo.As I remember I was 12 at the time it was 80 degrees and about 90% humidity it was miserable. As for the people back east in New York they dont have Air conditioning no wonder their crying.....
And for Dolores colorado it is a Beautiful Place and the mesa is incredible....
I was born in longmont Co. not a bad little spot in the road. But you just cant beat arizona for coyotes. As much as I like being in Az. I sure dont like the summers

I've always have either lived or worked for most of my life under swamp coolers. In an Auto Shop environment, it is extremely expensive to air condition the shop. Auto shops have big doors that have to be opened to get the cars in and out. Also, if you are running a car, your are generating tons of heat; plus, you have to vent the exhaust which means you have to bring in outside makeup air. We use to heat our shop in the winter with simply a van running with the exhaust system hooked up. The heat coming off the radiator worked real well.

I grew up in a house to the age of six with a simple swamp cooler. When I first started raising my family we only had swampers; but that was 20 years ago. I still work under swampers, and it has been real miserable in there lately. It will stay miserable until mid to late september.

I really do believe there is a difference. I'll take a dry heat over high humidity any day. I'll be leaving Monday for four days at my wife's family reunion in Ohio. Then we will be off to Washingtom DC with our grandson for a tour of our capital. I've never been there so there will be a lot of things for all of us to see. I'll be complaining just as much over there as I would here in Phoenix, probably more. As one poster said, easterners probably don't know about staying hydrated. At the wife's reunions, I've noticed I can drink more water than anyone elst. But hey, I'm used to drinking six quarts a day this time of year.

We have a lot of racing greyhound kennels around here where many of the pups you see at the big tracks are born and receive their early training. In high school, I worked seven days a week training dogs and the kennel where I worked was the first time I'd ever seen one up to that point. Makes you appreciate the fact that true air conditioning is based upon cooling AND removing humidity from the air being circulated into the dwelling, so that there shows you how important humidity is to the equation.

At the same time, when I had the HVAC system in our house replaced when we bought it, I had the HVAC guy include an inline humidification system that is connected to the heating side of the unit. When the fan kicks in on the furnace side, water is sent to a small swamp cooler-like unit on the side of the cold air return duct and I am able to control the relative humidity levels in the house. Keeping it at about 35-40% indoors allows me to turn the thermostat down as much as 3-5 degrees actual temperature, and still enjoy a "feels like" temp that feels much warmer, and much more comfortable. We adjust the humidification by adding just enough moisture to prevent static electricity. Throw a spark, turn up the humidifier. Keeps the woodwork, furniture and the wife's houseplants in great shape all winter, too.

I was thinking yesterday that most of all this complaining back east comes from the urban areas. You here very little from the rural areas. Maybe when the actual air temp is, say, 95-degrees, the "feels like" temps are much higher due to radiant heat being released from buildings and pavement where it has accumulated throughout the day. I thought about this because if you've ever listened to an early-season football game, the on-field commentator is always remarking about how hot it is down on the playing field compared to everywhere else.
