I mentioned this a while back. I fell out in my yard moving a chicken coop in June. My arm swelled up and turned black. After a couple days, my wife made me go to the doctor. I had broken my elbow. I wore a sling for a month or so and it healed up but continued to hurt.
Well, I just got back from an Orthopedic Surgeon. I gotta go in for MRI next friday. But he is pretty sure that I ruptured a disc in my neck and tore my rotator cuff as well. The symptoms are right for the rotator tear. He said he can see on the xray the disc is bad, so its pretty pronounced, but wont know the extent until the MRIs are done.
He says some level of surgery is going to be most likely required to fix both. It could be anything from orthoscopy to full surgery.
You know, I have done alot of crazy shit in my life. Been throwed off horses, stomped and kicked and beaten by horses, cattle and men. I fall in my fuckin yard and screw up my shoulder, elbow and kneck in a blink of an eye.
I dont know what this will do to my campout plans. Have to see next week I reckon.

I feel for ya Andy. Stuff I used to shrug off like nothing, hurts for weeks or months or even forever (my back) now.
I wrecked my motorcycle yesterday morning. Nothing serious at all. Just laid it down in the middle of the road at about 25 MPH to avoid an idiot. All I felt yesterday was a hell of a bruised up hip and leg. Woke up this morning hurting in all kinds of new places. Turns out I have a sprained or maybe broken thumb and something is hurting like hell in my shoulder too. Can't turn my neck either. Hell of it is, far as I know, I did all that in my SLEEP last night!

Sorry to hear that, but I guess that's the bitch about getting old. I am relatively young at 35, but I have had 7 knee surgeries and a pin in my shoulder to tie it back to my collar bone. every day I hurt. bad thing about shoulder sourgery is that most people develop degenerative bone disease in the neck, which I have, and the only solution is fusing.

I'm not kidding. I broke my toe getting out of bed three or four days ago. My back has been bothering me so I decided to not put a strain on it and just roll out of bed, like I have never done before. I caught my little toe in the metal handle on one side of the dresser drawer, which is shaped like a recurved bow, tapered at both ends....perfect! I still can't figure out how I did it? Hurt like a MF. I have not worn a pair of shoes since.
Good luck on the MRI, Andy. I just got a shock two weeks ago on my hip and lower back MRI. The damned copay was $331!
Good hunting. LB

I had this really funny story to tell about the first time I blew my neck out, but it got too long and I deleted it. The second part was about the pain balm Ronnie sent me that made it feel a LOT better. That went, too.
I'll just tell Andy that I know how that neck feels, feel for ya man, and hope the MRI gets you going toward getting her fixed up. The wife is having her entire shoulder cleaned out a week from today for an injury somewhat like that RC tear.

Several years ago at the place where I work, a couple employees had the bright idea to form a softball team made up of co-workers and join a summer league.
I decided not to play because it had been at least a decade since I played any organized sport and I thought it would be a good way to probably screw up some part of my anatomy before hunting season.
A bunch of co-workers signed up with the majority in the 25-40 year-old range, but still consider themselves in 18-year-old bodies. After the first game, three people did not make it to work the next day. Backs, ankles, and shoulders all took a beating and the sick-time was being used at a rapid pace with one guy needing surgery. The next game got another guy or two bunged up. If I remember correctly, they barely finished the season due to a lack of healthy bodies. This was all from a group who do mostly physical work for a living but the rough world of city league softball dropped them like flies.

DAA and Leonard,
I'm not one to try and dole out medical advice, but you both mentioned backs hurting.
My back was giving me hell about a dozen years ago for an extended time. A guy I know suggested a system of stretches known as the Egosque Method that had helped him. I started doing them religiously every day before and after work.
It wasn't a two-week miracle change by any means, closer to several months, but things came around and I could notice small amounts of relief shortly after starting. I can honestly say that I feel great now and my back never gives me trouble anymore. Even when doing stuff that used to bug the hell out of me like running a chainsaw all day.
To each his own and like I said, I hate to give out medical advice, but after trying a bunch other remedies outside of surgery, this was the one that worked for me.
Posted by DAA (Member # 11) on August 26, 2009, 06:14 PM:
Appreciate the thought Lonny. I do, have been for a couple of years now, religously every day, a routine of stretches and lumbar stabilization exercises that the last doctor I saw taught me. Helps. A lot. Pretty sure I'd have got cut, glued and screwed back together by now without it.

Don't laugh I myself experianced "Bolt-Action Inflammation" last spring. Some "wimp" doctor referred too my condition as "tennis elbow"
I was sure that my elbow had somehow became fractured or something. Anyway after x-rays & a few doctor visits they put my elbow in a brace & it finally went away.
Weird..I certainly had hoped for a more "Definitive" explanation for the cause of my pain. And in case anybodys wondering no I don't play tennis !!

No, I didn't get my official wolf tag yet.
Actually I have a permanent, unlimited season, and no bag limit wolf tag that is free. You should get one of those if you haven't yet.
Yep, running those dang 9" grinders gave me a nice case of "grinders elbow" a few years back. I never went to the doc, but WebMD said thats what it was.
I wore one of the gay looking compression bands for about a month on my forearm (luckily it was hidden under my coveralls) and it seemed to help. All is good now.

Yikes Andy! Sorry to hear about the fall. I wonder sometimes if the inability to spring right back like when we were young might have something to do with our size - atleast a little anyway. I don't know about you guys, but I was a skinny little guy in High School; that was about 100 lbs. ago! LOL You must fit pretty snug in an MRI machine - I didn't even realize someone with 3 foot wide shoulders could fit into one of those things! Jeepers - I hate those - really really badly. I might even prefer solitary confinement for a day in lieu of 20 minutes in that devil's dungeon.
Dave, do you wear a helmet? I wrecked on my bike going pretty fast about 10 years ago (all my fault - not enough front brake and way too much back) Anyway, the momentum was pushing me way faster than I can run when I landed so I rolled and rolled and rolled. All I got was a quarter sized scratch on my elbow and a sore butt. But man 'o man, you should of seen my helmet - really long deep scratches all around it. Very SPOOKY to wonder "What if...?"

I've been beaten, shot at, cut up and cussed more times that I care to recall. But I'm still here, Thankful for each day that I've yet one more chance, to try to make up for the sins of my youth. My daily aches and pains and handfuls of pills are a daily reminder of where I've been and what I've done. I wouldn't wish my afflictions on anyone, but it's nice to know that I'm not alone in feeling the results of life.

I HATE those f'n MRI machines ('scuse my language, fellas). Nothing in this world ever made me feel clusterphobic (I know that ain't spelt right) 'till I got stuffed into one of those evil contraptions.

Andy, I don't envy you that MRI crap at all. Talking about being able to fit in the machine reminds me of something pretty funny I saw once though.
My Sister's husband is a big guy. He wrecked the shit out of my ATV once. Broke some bones and got knocked out in the process. I took him to the closest place for treatment, which was in Caliente, Nevada. Little clinic type place. No real doctor there either. But the nurse that was there, decides my BIL needs an MRI. The MRI is a "portable", in a trailer out in the parking lot. She wheels him out there has him climb on the table and then she starts trying to wedge him in that thing. But he wasn't fitting. AT ALL. She was actually backing up the table and making a running start at trying to cram him in. He's tying not to sound TOO much like a little girl because I'm watching the whole thing and he knows he'll hear about it for the rest of my life. He can't help letting out a couple of pretty sickly sounding gasps and a minor scream or two. Finally, a more senior nurse (I guess?), pulls into the parking lot and walks over to see WTF. When she saw that other nurse, trying to cram BIL (who it turns out had broken arm, wrist, collar bone and ribs) into a tunnel he was clearly, NEVER going to fit into, she got all pissed off and put an end to it. I thought it was funny as hell though.

HAL9000: Caliente is getting within my area, Dave. I thought we had an agreement?
My MRI was supposed to be 3X30 minutes each, with a potty break after the first two, but then he caught me wiggling and I had to do the last one over. It was pure torture, I'm sure it was about two hours and during the first two, all I could think about was the mistake of folding my arms on to my chest. I had them along my sides for the last one and it was a lot better. I couldn't expand my chest properly and comfortably.
I had to do all of it with a cloth over my eyes, which helped, a lot. I just couldn't take the claustrophobic feeling. Never knew I was that way? Yelled like hell for a "do over".
Also, I got music for the last two, don't know why I could have it for the first hour?
If you guys think these things are a picnic; think again.....and quit with the old and broke down jokes, okay?
Good hunting. LB

Bulletin: Barefoot, Missouri Aug. 28, 2009
Details are sketchy. In a chain of unfortunate circumstances, a local man is recovering after losing part of his body in an MRI machine that malfunctioned. Technicians, working on a stuck table mistakenly installed a heavy duty, high speed motor while the patient, a corn fed local man was sedated with three times the normal amount of Vicodin. Authorities are still investigating how the blue pills were administered to the nervious gentleman, and how the mixup occured. What is known is that the operator had forgotten that the safety latch was engaged and unfortunately, the tech's trainee released it with the table under pressure.
The investigating officer said the scene resembled a collision on the Interstate with a bus hitting the overpass abutment at high speed, throwing limbs and body parts into oncoming traffic.
Mr Andy J. Bubba was taken to HumptyDumpty Memorial where a hastily assembled team of Vets are attempting to reattach something but hospital staff, citing patient confidentiality, for some unknown reason, declined to identify the mangled body part?
Channel 4's reporter, Cindy (hot pants) Sizzler is standing by for an exclusive interview, however, the man's family is asking for a substitute.
In the meantime, claim adjusters from Allstate Insurance requested estimates from every body shop in town and foot longs from Subway, but it is expected the machine will be declared a total loss, unless it can be converted to the only "open MRI" in Cochise County.

Bofire,
they keep telling me that I'll ultimately have to go the way of that neck fusion. For the rest of you, that's where they go in and insert bone chips from your hips between the vertebrae in your neck after removing those pesky discs, and as if that isn't scary enough, they go in from the front, on either side of your voice box! Nope. I'll tough it out.
Paul,
As an employee of the Postal Service, I can assure you that there is an entire "other side" to what has happened to us. I may take a few minutes to write another book and explain how Congress has screwed us up so everyone can foresee what will be their health insurance down the line.
Oh, what the hell, here are a few of the bullet points...
Did you hear that in 1982, COngress took away all federal finanical support from the Dept. of the Post office, renamed in the US Postal Service, and forced them to compete directly with private enterprise like UPS, but won't allow USPS to play by the same beneficial tax laws, like depreciating assets? That's killing us.
Or, did you hear that with the Postal Reauthorization Act of 2006, Congress mandated that the USPS prefund retirement and healthcare expenses for all current employees - something that no other agency or private company has ever had to do? better yet, did you hear that in FY2008, USPS was forced to contribute $8 BILLION to that fund, which put USPS $3 billion in the hole. In other words, if it weren't for Congress' stupid idea, USPS would have been $3 biliion to the good that year. In FY2008, if we didn't have to contribute to this fund, we'd have been $400,000 in the black.
Or, has anyone told you that in the last two years, USPS has reduced its workforce by nearly 137,000 people, and by 10,000,000 man-hours? No one's said a thing about that, have they? Nor did theys ay much about the fact that through our hard work and cooperation between management and employees, we were able to reduce our losses by $6 BILLION in just ending FY2009. No other federal agency can come close to making these draconian cuts, but we have. And still, the myth continues to exist that USPS gets tax money. We don't. Our operating revenue comes from the sale of stamps, and nothing more. TYhe loss of 3rd class business mail due to a failing economy has killed us. E-mail and online transactions/ banking are a part of it, but not the main part. When the economy turns around, so will we, but we won't be able to make money to cover our bottom line until Congress releases its death clutch on us. They get involved deeply in that which they know nothing about, and health care will be even worse.

A wise man once said that to know the future, you must study the past. Is there ANY reason to belive that congress will not commit the same crimes against health care that they have against the post office????

I saw a provocative headline a while ago.
GOVERNMENT MANDATED CIRCUMCISION!
True or not, it fits perfectly with the rest of their ideas and policies.

letting the government run any type of free enterprize is dead on the water, all those businesses that they bailed out and took over an interest in, were run exactly like the government, the only things that keep the government running are
1) they answer to know one, no owners shareholders or anyone other but themselves so there is no accountability
2) they make good use of the never-ending cashflow from the pocket of the american taxpayer.
So they bail out companies that were ran poorly, and went broke, paid the guys who ran them poorly even bigger money and what do you thinks gonna happen? its throwing good money after bad.
