Okay, I never watch this show, but I did for about ten minutes last night.

There was some sort of explanation, with graphics for a suicide in which two bullets were fired from a revolver.

It seems that occasionally, a slow bullet is still in the barrel when the trigger is pulled a second time and that bullet catches up with the first one, there is a a lot of splattered blood and two bullets side by side on the carpet.

WTF? NASA, can you check snopes for us because I have my doubts?

Good hunting. LB

PS this explains why 52% vote for change they can believe in. People will believe anything!

Like you, I don't watch the show but I've seen a handful of scenes over the years. I generally sit in front of a TV 1 hour a week... and I scan channels until I find something worth watching which is generally on public broadcasting.

A couple of skits that caught my eye on CSI were-

1) "An increase in coyote populations lead investigators to a desert outside vegas where they found numerous skeletons dumped by a serial murderer. Coyotes howled in the distance (Daylight) as they collected the bones."

2) "A hunter in a treestand shoots a crossbow at a deer, misses, and proceeds to chase it on foot. He's keeping up, step for step, right up until he falls into the cockpit of a crashed jet hidden under the leaves."

3) "An apparent suicide turns out to be an accidental shooting from a 9mm (Handgun) round fired into the air almost 6 miles away. They back-tracked the trajectory & angle of declination and pinpointed the guilty homeowner with a RIFLE target in his back yard."

You gotta be shittin' me? People watch these fairy tales and nobody doubts? I see many people that claim CSI is their favorite program, but if these are examples of the usual plot lines, these people are far more stupid than I would have guessed?

Good hunting. LB

The maximum velocity of a .38 special is 708 feet per second (http://www.chuckhawks.com/handgun_power_chart.htm).

There are claims that some revolver shooters can get off all six rounds in less than one second.

Given equal time between six shots/one second (for ease of calculations) the answer becomes one shot every .1667 seconds (rounded at the third point behind decimal).

How far can a bullet travel in .1667 seconds becomes the key, I would think. Assuming equal time between shots, that distance becomes 118 feet. That same shot has appx. 176 ft/lbs of force, I would think that a bullet "slowed" in the barrel that much would pretty much rip the pistol right out of your hands. Grab a torque wrench and try to put 176 ft/lbs on a bolt, it takes quite a bit of force. Sounds like typical television "ooh, scary guns!" b.s. to me, but what do I know...

My wife chastizes me for "Criticizing" the shows... she says "its just entertainment".

Bullshit, I say, people see all the fancy lab equipment and hear the upbeat music and all-of-a-sudden they start “learning” from these shows. The same is probably true with those medical drama’s – but I’ve yet to land on one that caught my attention.

Something else I’ve noticed about these shows is that they DO IT ALL. Ever notice that? They go out and look at the initial crime scene, they question witnesses, they analyze bullets, they dig thru criminal databases, they develop theories and motives, they interrogate and they press the charges. BS- a professional worth their salt at ANY of those practices wouldn’t be responsible for the others… much less ALL. And take a look at the romantic lighting when they are working in a lab… look at the makeup when they’re in a clean room.

The scary part is, when I find myself enjoying an episode of some similar show… I realize that the subject matter of that show is often out of my realm of experience or level of comprehension. When my personal level of common sense can see thru the smokescreen- I’m too pissed to sit back and enjoy it. When they talk over my head, I’m just as guilty of sitting on the edge of my seat. I guess ignorance is bliss- especially in Hollywood.

HaHa, big hole in your theory if the revolver is a FIVE shot! Let's see, 60º versus 72º is what? Now, the barrel only has to less than a hundred feet long for two bullets to get stuck, right? NASA, check it out, and my math; I never got past fractions.

I accept the suggestion that it's "just entertainment" like Cinderella and Lord of the Rings, (which I also have not seen) and Man versus Wild.....now, there is the biggest dose of bullshit on TV. They use the phrase; Suspended disbelief in all forms of entertainment. And, elections.

Good hunting. LB

edit: wait a minute! I have a 38Special load with a 125 grain bullet that is a hell of a lot faster than 700fps.

That 700 fps number is one I pulled off a chart, it may or may not be completely accurate, I was just trying to get a start point.

Yeah, it'd be a hell of a handgun to have a barrel that long, and also withstand the pressure between the two bullets being in the barrel. The compression between the two bullets would cause something more dramatic to happen, I would think. I base that on the old safety class I took where they brought out the hunting rifle with the daisied barrel from having a piece of styrofoam in the end.

Ultimately, I think the idea here (on the show) was to create some "science" to support a dumbass idea some writer dreamed up...

My wife loves the show, I hate it. BUT
Ed Mcgovern did many times empty a stock smith 38 in 2/5th of a second.
Second torque of 176 lbs and impact of 176 lbs do not relate.
All most all tv and movies suck.

exactly! Im sure real science is a very small part of that show just a few consultants to give the nod on plausibility.

I've seen it from time to time , usually cant stay awake that late....
Outside of Nat Geo., some dicovery and speed channel aint much worth watching 150 channels of chrome plated Crap!

I have this image of old Ed; six bullets in the barrel at the same time! Can't believe those CSI writers missed the chance to use it; See, this chick was attempting to imitate Ed's feat and shoot herself six times, thereby getting into the Guiness Book, but.....

What a dumb ass show!

Come to think of it, there are plenty out there than would probably NEED six shots to shoot themselves int the head; I have hunted with a couple of them. The boys tell me "Unknown" s like that.

Good hunting. LB

Oh shit, I'm getting silly! Scott F, removes plug, 6 shots with his shotgun and misses six times. But, that other guy didn't.

Who is Ed MCgovern? 2/5 second?

I didn't know any one was faster at emptying a revolver than Jerry Miculek

Ed Mcgovern was a protege' of Vic Carlson back in the '30s. He did some pretty amazing stuff, don't know if it included what this guy does on YouTube, but he absolutely had talent and did some impressive tricks.
