via email from my daughter.
She lives in Marinwood, north of San Francisco, lots of wilderness type areas surrounding the residential. Maybe it wasn't a critical situation, but still.... I know there are enough deer in the area that there must be predators, but this is the first time for eyeballing one. Donna is my cat. Read on~

Hey Daddy,
Hope you're having fun in Arizona its been (a long time) since I've been to Phoenix.

My friend Stan called me last week and he said theres a ton of snow on
Mt. Baldy! We're going to Tahoe later this week for 2 days. We haven't been
there for a couple years.

I forgot to tell you that I saw a Mountain Lion about a week ago. It
was really scary! I was hiking in the hills with the dogs when I saw
something move at the top of the hill. At first I suspected it was a
deer, cuz I see those all the time, but then I thought maybe it was a
coyote, but it was too small. Finally I realized that it was a
cougar!!! It was about 4 or 5 hundred yards away from me just sitting
on his hind legs. He definitely saw me but he must have just eaten
recently, otherwise, I'm sure we would of been his lunch!!! I walked
calmly until I was out of his sight and then I ran like a bat out of hell for my car!!!
I don't think he saw the dogs and thank God the dogs didn't see him.
He looked to be about 120 pounds or so....and probably
young. It was very scary. I called the Marin Open Space District, left
a message, and they never called me back. Now I'm afraid to hike in
the hills.

Anyway, hope you make it home safely. Give Donna a hug for me. Talk to
you soon,
Shelley

Aren't all California cats Vegetarians?

They must all be friendly, that's why they don't let you shoot them.

Are you coming south for coyotes on this trip, or saying up north to chase those two legged fox?

Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take
an ass kickin'.

I'm already back, Tim. Ran out of ammunition so I stopped by Higgins to challenge him to a leg wrassle but he must have seen me and took off?

The two things that I find interesting in her email is estimating the distance and how much the animal weighed. Where did she come up with 4, 500 yards? I haven't known her to be very precise about distances or weight, but she did have a big dog that was over one hundred pounds along with a yapper, so I suppose she would have some idea?

Her brother came up with the best observation; why in the hell doesn't she carry that Lady Smith that used to belong to her mother? I forgot to ask her about that?

Good hunting. LB

Yes, and they always point out that statistically, it is far more likely to be shot with your own gun. Statistics provided by Handgun Control. I'm sure they have documentation of lions wresting control and turning the weapon on the victim; conjured up the same way as all the rest of their "statistics".

And, besides. We are invading their space, so we should expect a few attacks, now and then. Small price to pay for ensuring the survival of these magnificent and endangered beasts.

Good hunting. LB

edit: laugh all you want, Paul. It won't be long before they implement a citizen protection plan that involves melting (your's and mine) all of our "junk" guns into paperweights. I'm sure legislation prohibiting concealed paperweights will be addressed right after that?

It's my understanding that all cougar in California have signed up for welfare, so actively "prowling" and "preying" would result in a forefeiture of their food stamps, or something like that.
