A scan from dad's collection from WWII. Testing a new scanner, never owned one before.

Joe,
Bump the bottom left side of the scanner to the right. It's slightly catty-whampus. Other than that, it's working great.
Now........What IS that thing??

Here's another vintage photo. Im sure originally it was captured in shades of sepia for the original tin type, but I had it colorized for clarity:)

Joe, You can't post a pic of a dead croc from WWII without a story. I used to work with a retired electrician who was in WWII and when I could get him telling war stories it was always very enlightening.

AZ, is the fellow with pork chop side burns you?

Good photos gents.

No Lonny. That's me, about 1969-70, or so? The funny part is it was taken right down in Vic's neighborhood on a little extended safari through Texas, New Mexico and southern AZ. I was going to school at the time and didn't make it back, that day, because hunting was too good. And, also the fact that we made a wrong turn in Demming. Not my fault, I was sleeping. I got dropped, excessive absences. How about those sideburns?

Good hunting. LB

I recognise the skyline behind you, but how long has that Railroad been gone?

"wrong turn in Demming"

Is that near Deming NM? [Big Grin]

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on December 17, 2008, 09:20 AM:

Yeah, Dan. At least it used to be in NM, far as I know? I told the crew up front to make a right at Rodeo and assumed they would know which way to turn when they reached the interstate. I wuz wrong.

Good hunting. LB

edit: wish I could find another red shirt with yellow stripes! Now, that was the height of fashion, prob still is?

I've always envied guys that could wear horizontal stripes I would look like a pickle barrel.

Hey, I finally see the croc?

Taken in Tonopah, NV 1979

Owens Valley, CA My son's first bobcat, 1980.edit: wait a minute! Wrong pic, I think that's a "yote"?

 -
This is one of my favorites. 1969 My cousin is learning not to stop and downshift..... and it's starting to rain!

Good hunting. LB

edit: it was 1969, I know, it was a new Datsun PU. 1971 was probably when the film was developed?

edit: ma, this scanning shit is a lost art, as far as I'm concerned!

Great pictures! I don't figure that cowboy next to you in the first picture would be onecoyote but it very well could be because of his "looks" a generation or two ago! [Wink]

Nope, not Danny, but he would probably know Richard Cooper? You know, back in the day?

Scanner bumped for Koko:

Lonny, not much of a story ever told, I guess the damned thing just wandered in to camp one day. It was killed with a barrage of .30 M1 carbine fire and 45's from a M1A1 Thompson and a 1911. I have that pic around here somewhere, too.

I got some of them early 70's coyote pics to scan in. Just lookin for the right ones. Seems like there is a song out now that says something about being a cross between "Hair Boy" and man....
that would about sum it up.

Meanwhile, not vintage, but one of my favorite hard-copy coyote photos scanned in:

Yeah, I sure knew Richard Copper and his little brother Johnny Copper. They owned a store across the street from the Agajaians.
If you had no money you could sign an IOU and leave with some food. Buy now, pay later back in those days.
I know where Rodeo is, not far from Animas. Killed a nice desert mule deer down that way plus a few coyotes.
Leonard, you snowed in yet?

Joe; you got it perfect!! Not trying to be anal but other boards grade us on this kind of stuff.

How cool would it be to call in a crock or a gator?????!!!!!

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on December 17, 2008, 09:01 PM:

That's right, but Johnny Cooper ain't little anymore. He owns a construction business in phoenix. Richard lives next door to me in Rancho.

Snowed in? Weeell, not yet. Been raining all day, temperature is below 40º right now. I talked to my son earlier and he said it was blizzard conditions out in Banning, more snow than he has seen in about eight years.

Good hunting. LB

Be thankful for the rain. We just received 29" of snow in the last 30 hours. I am tired of shoveling the driveway. Maybe I'll just hibernate.

Great photos gentleman.

I'll bet that poor sonofabitch is half deaf now....notice the lack of proper hearing protection. I can only imagine where you gained posession of that vintage photo my friend?

Some neat 'ol pictures Leonard. Curious, what or how did you get into calling predators?

Posted by JoeF (Member # 228) on December 25, 2008, 04:06 PM:

There is something "Hollywood" about that 12/23 pic of Vic.

Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry (best movie ever) meets Easy Rider..... Something like that.

Still playing with the scanner and having more fun (and flashbacks....) than the law allows.

Predator and prey vintage 1980. Beautiful lady at a holiday celibration!

Dang, TR. Thanks for asking, but it's a real long and probably boring story, how I got into predators. Sufice to say, my uncle worked with a guy at Aerojet who belonged to a Club. We went to a meeting and went on a hunt, dead of winter froze our asses off, totally unprepared. My uncle never went again, but I did. lol

Yeah Joe. Vic is Hollywood all the way, he just don't know it.

Good hunting. LB

Leonard, it seems like predator hunting "clubs" all began and stayed in Cali., AZ., and maybe NM. too? I wonder why other states never had any clubs. None that I'm aware of any ways. Any idea why those states seemed to be the founding places for "clubs"? Anyone? And did the clubs have a purpose, as in fighting for hunting rights, or other reasons? Or was it just a bunch of guys that shared the passion for calling that wanted a reason to get together on occasion to talk "calling."?

Posted by onecoyote (Member # 129) on December 26, 2008, 04:22 PM:

The first known predator hunting club in the U.S. was in Texas, it was called the Texas Wild Animals Callers Associtation. Not sure the year it started but a good bet would be in the early 50s or late 40s.
I'm not sure when the Arizona Varmint callers Asso became a club, maybe 1956 or 1957, they were the second predator hunting club in the country. Then in 1959 the California Varmint Callers Asso became a club.
There may have been other clubs in the U.S. but I never heard of them years ago. There are lots of them now.
As Far as New Mexico goes, they do have a club, The New Mexico Predator Callers Asso. To my knowledge it was not around in the 50s, matter of fact I know it wasn't lol.
Let me say, some of the biggest names in the sport of predator calling came from those three clubs.

So Danny, why were the clubs started? What was the purpose? It seems that calling predators wouldn't have been under atack by "anti's" back then, and these days it seems as if a lot of guys wouldn't share thier "spot" with thier neighbors dog let alone another "caller", and even it seems that some guys won't even share thier techniques freely.

TRnCo,
Here are a couple of links which will give you a little input into the beginning Arizona predator calling clubs.

“Anti’s”? In the 50’s and 60’s those folks were just forming their opinions about being anti, I believe.

TR, the motivation was recognition and competition.

Turn in tails for points and patches and higher awards. Compete for trophys, most animals within a certain timeframe, etc.

Good hunting. LB

Going predator hunting with friends and turning in full bodies or tails (for awards and trophies) was one of the big reasons many of us belonged to the club. Competing against friends was alot of fun too, sometimes you'd win, sometimes you'd lose. As we've gotten older, the one thing we all have in common is great memories. Note the young Granville Crow and Danny Batastini(note the cigarette in Batastini's hand).

Those animals Danny is showing needs a little explanation. That's a proof of kill, usually a tail and backstrap and maybe ears, scalp attached, or front paws, something similiar. Nobody knew what the proof of kill was going to be until drawn out of a hat right at the exact beginning of the hunt.

Now, the reason for the proof of kill was because it became physically impossible to load that many animals into a vehicle, so a whole body was an option, but the more competitive teams took a proof of kill to save room in the rig.

I bet Danny knows who's truck this is?

Good hunting. LB

edit: by the way, every one of those photos show the kill of a single team.

Yep, I know that truck. Those are just some of the reasons Leonard and I always talk about the so called good old days, because they were the good old days. [Smile]

Thanks for the links Danny, and the other pics. Leonard. I wonder why clubs never took hold in other states like the Dakota's, Neb. Utah, etc. SO, were the pelts not worth anything back then? And were there bountys for the tails/proof of kills?

Sorry for so many questions. Got my curiosity goin'! [Smile]

Posted by onecoyote (Member # 129) on December 27, 2008, 11:31 AM:

TRnCO, we didn't always take tails. When the price of pelts went up in the late 70's we cased them. Leonard, I told you I knew who's truck that was. lol

Hey Joe. You know, your pics don't show up half the time? I don't know if the problem is Hunt101, or what?

Good hunting. LB

edit: PS Danny, that's Doug's old house. He's out in the Corona/Norco area now.

re edit: Some of these guys don't know the meaning of HERO SHOTS, ya know? Man, I should have a bunch of checkin photos, but I gave them all to Rick. He has the Club scrapbook.

Man, you need to get some of those pictures back from Rick and make some copys. I remember the coyote that Rick and Lyle took that had it's head stuck in the ring of a jar, great pic.
I never took pictures of the old days. Started taking some in the mid 70s and 80s that's better then nothing I guess.
It is alot of fun to look at some old pictures. Some of these other "old guys" need to post a few too.

LB, no idea why the pic's would fail to show up. I've never had any issues with hunt101, but who knows.

I'm still looking for my old coyote pic's, I've got a couple when I was just a pup that I sat aside recently.....somewhere....

Guess I could just stick with old girlfriend pictures, huh? Anybody like bikinis?

Meantime, Danny and Leonard, keep em coming. Those are some classics that will cause a few jaws to hit the ground.
