Just found this picture, along with others in series, supposedly taken near Mulvane, Kansas in the south central part of the state.

Looks like we have at least three, and they had a meeting in early October to see what they could do to cause even more problems for our state wildlife agency and their continuing efforts to spread doubt about the existence of mountain lions in Kansas. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
Then again, it seems this same group has been holding pow wows all over the central and western parts of the country.
Why is it that people are so intrigued with pictures of lions and no one ever posts legendary pics of coyotes that look just like chupacabras?

When it comes to Cougars and Game & Fish Depts. 'denial' is more than just a river in Egypt. If they admit that they have cougar, they have to manage couger. Money, time & man-power that could be used selling deer tags & fishing licenses.
And........if there ARE cougar, there are so few of them that they are 'endangered'. Better cut out access to lion habitat & reduce deer hunting in those areas to provide lion prey. Can you say 'Can of Worms'???
It could be worse for you though; Here in Az. the pamphlet requesting Jaguar sighting information is "...produced with the support of the Az. Game & Fish Dept, DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE, and the U.S.D.A. Forest Service."

Along the same lines, if they admit that they're here, they're required to manage them and that really pisses off the livestock lobby. Ergo, can o' worms. They and everyone else knows we have them around. One was killed here last year. But, they spin it now that we don't have a resident or breeding population. Transients are okay.

I would not jump the gun on those being here in KS. I have got a email forward from friend in Nebraska first about those and then Kansas. I think others have got them saying other states. Those pics are just a stupid email forward. Sweet pics though, wish we knew the true state.

Oklahoma has like a few other states denied a cougar population. Now our law says if they are a nuisance or threat we can kill em. Problem is one warden told us point blank "we have mountain lions down here (SE OK) leave em alone." Then you have other wardens saying c'mon somebody kill one already then go after bigfoot.
As someone who has seen them on more than one occasion, I need no further proof but I once tried to tell a game warden about the last one me and my dad saw. He cut the conversation short and didn't want to hear it. I finally pressed him a bit and he replied if we document the existance we have to manage them and you don't even want the animal rights people messing with that.
So no, we have no cougars just some pets that escaped or maybe just one passing through.

Putting all the speculation of where the picture was taken asside. That is a great picture showing the way a MT. Lion eats his kill. Starting in the ribs eating the chest organs first..... Interestingly enough, a Jaguar starts on the face and upper neck first (According to one of the Jaguar researchers here in Southern Arizona)..... Cotoyes and other dogs start from the back end..... A very decent picture.

Here in Mo. the MDC denied for years until an agent got a picture of one and the news got ahold of it somehow. Also the advent of the use of game cameras in the last ten or so years has pretty much made liars out ot the MDC.

Randy, I know where that lion was found. There was speculation that it possibley got on a rail car in SD and thats how it ended up here. Looking at a map, its a long trip otherwise. I was told it was a juvenile male, do you have any other details?

Geordie, yes it was a juvenile male if my memory serves me right, the miles it had traveled was incredible.
How a lion gets hit by a train, did it sneek up on him, was it feeding on something else the train had hit on the tracks, I don't know. I guess the engineer would have some insight but I have never heard. Sounds like a CSI deal to me!!

I'm having a bit of a problem here, and don't know WHAT to belive;
(1) That a cougar jumped a freight in S.D & hoboed it to Ok??
(2) That a cougar got hit by a train?? I've only heard of a few that have gotten hit by cars, let alone a train???
(3) That the Amish are building electric heaters???
(4) That there are cougars in the Mid-West????

Randy, All good points. I have always wondered what the details were on that lion, or if any details are known.
Its just always been funny to me how I talked to more people here in OK who have seen mountain lions, than I have in a state like Az. I guess we are pretty much over run.

Don't feel bad Geordie, I always had more people in Indiana tell me about spotting mountain lions than I have had see them here in Arizona.
I've still never seen a live, wild lion myself.

well one thing we know is that lion came from SD as it was a collared cat!
I also believe the one they found in Canada as of late was also a collared cat from our Black Hills as well.

Coyote Whacker; Maybe yes......maybe no. What we know is that 'a collar from S.D.' was found attached to 'a lion in Ok.' and 'a collar from S.D.' was found attached to 'a lion in Canada'.
So.......we may need to rewrite what we know about cougar dispersal distances, and ask why they are traveling that far.
Or........we might want to find out what those discredited Lynx researchers have been up to lately.
Something's screwy about all of this.
