Today was arts and crafts day at our house. My daughter Sissy decided to make a hat band. Step by step instructions included for Mule.
Step one is locate a nice size snake...

Cut off the head and split the skin up the middle. Peel the skin off the body being careful to not tear it.
Staple the skin to a board with the scale side down. Scrape the meat off and let the skin dry for about a day. Brush on a thin coat of Van Dykes Reptile tan and repeat every 24 hours for a total of 3 to 10 times until the hide is supple. Cut the hide off inside the staples and wipe down both sides with alcohol. You have a unique band for your stetson for about an hours' worth of work. Doug

My Goodness Doug... she has grown! So beautiful... I can't believe you don't have her locked in her room yet?
You are teaching her the basics spot on!

I used a brand new razor blade to cut a snake skin down the middle. I actually think a pair of scissors would of made a nicer straighter cut than even a razor knife or steel blade. Just my thoughts, but the nicer that center cut, the nicer the band.
Doug, did you guys kill those snakes today? How often do you see them? Were those 2 together? They ought to be thinking about taking the long nap here pretty quick.
P.S. That's my kind of art craft man. My kids love that kind of stuff. [ September 18, 2008, 07:16 PM: Message edited by: Locohead ]

I like the idea of using a scissors to slice up the center. Both the snakes were catching rays in our driveway this afternoon. We kill about a half dozen rattlers a year right around the house.
I get the reptile tan from Van Dykes taxidermy supply.
