Well Ike is knocking on the door and the windows.

Most likley be my last post for a spell. They have told us due to the size of Ike we may not get power for a couple of weeks.

Any one wont to guess what the gas prices will be Monday morning?.

Fox News national is citing Orange, TX as having taken the brunt of Ike and being "...one of the hardest hit areas in Texas". Please post any information anyone gets from or about Ronnie as soon as it is received.

I've been seeing that too... I just dug up his cell phone number... I'll try it here in about an hour or so.

OK... I'm on the cell phone now with him. He made it through it! No damage to the house. Lost power. Just a few tree's down this time, but the major problem is flooding. Not his house, but the town is flooded majorily!

He said being north of Interstate 10 was what saved him. South of 10 is under about 4 feet or more of water. They are saying monthes before electricity and water.

Jamie and I were out of town yesterday, but Ronnie called and left a message.

They just got power back yesterday, phone line was restored. The cell phone works now in some areas.

He also said that he has lots of stories to tell. Like about the house catching on fire and the ten cowboys that got drunk and decided to throw bottles up in the air and shoot them down at the intersection. He said that him and DD (his dog) went and had a little chat with them and gave them 2 choices. He said that he didn't have to get the trackhoe out and dig any holes, that they decided on the right choice. [Big Grin]

Can't wait to hear all about it!

Talk with Ronnie. He had gotten a big generator some time ago but never had a chance to use it. It's one of those that run the entire household. Well, because of laundry and stuff that needed to be done, he got it hooked up and turned on. He went into the house and heard some static sounds. He thought maybe it was his radio that he had on the night the hurricane hit, so he went to invenstigate.

Nope, no radio, so he went on his search to see what it could be that was making that sound when he rounded the corner of the living room and there it was. Flames shooting and following the electrical route up, down and over and through his walls. Lots of snaps and pops.

He ran to hit the main shut off breaker and then proceded to call one of his buddies and get the flames out.

They got all the flames out and called an electrician.

Now J, being a wonderfully smart lady, had been little by little, buying these expensive surge protectors to plug appliances into, here and there. When she would get an extra few bucks, she would get another one and put that somewhere in the house. Ronnie never knew this... until the day of the fire.

If J hadn't been on her toes, they would have lost all appliances and such in the house. So needless to say, she saved the house and now Ronnie has to get his computer guru over there to change the fuse in the puter.

He told me the story about the drunken cowboys, but I think I will let him share that one... it's quite funny and true to Ronnie style [Big Grin]

Dang, just how high did he get the voltage set on that Generator?

I had an apprentice once time miss wire a transformer, everyone on that block got one 120V leg and one 240v leg. It burned up a few appliances, but didn't start any fires.

I got called out to a primary wire down last Sunday night. A 7,200 volt line had broken and fell onto a service line running into a house. The fuse feeding the bare copper high voltage line didn't blow. It was still hot until I got onsite and opened it. By all rights, that house should have had everything electronic burned up, and probably set the house on fire. Luckily, the wire was resting on the insulation of a fairly new service line, less than a quarter inch from the bare neutral. Why it never went to ground and blew the fuse is amazing. What's even more remarkable, is that absolutely nothing in the house was damaged. The woman who lives there should buy a lottery ticket.

I've been offline for most of the past week due to generator problems myself. My main generator broke down ( again ) and the one I rented kept popping the circuit breaker every two minutes. I finally bought a POS generator for $100 at a swap meet. It burns two quarts of oil to every five gallons of gas, I was out adjusting it by lantern light until 10 pm the other night, before I could finally get it to pay out 113v while under load.

Here is a hint for those of you who have a voltmeter. I know that every one likes to talk about 110 volt and 220 volt lines. That's pure bullshit, sorry but you have been mislead. The industry standard in the United States is 120-240 +/- 5% That gives you a range of 114v-126v phase to ground, and 228v-252v phase to phase. If your voltage is outside of these parameters call your Utility company. They are required to fix it.

If the lights in your house ever look dim, check the voltage. If you get 111v or less, start unplugging any electronics that you don't want to replace. Low voltage will burn up a lot more than high voltage.

118.6vac here, according to my Fluke. I will monitor it, day and night, henceforth.

One comment; even correctly wired transformers can blow up when energized. Not often, but it happens.

An exploding electrical device is an awesome thing to behold.

Good hunting. LB

If you think that it is cool to see it from the back yard, you should try it from my perspective.

I can't count the number of times I've blown something up at the other end of an 6'-8' hot stick.

Makes for a hell of a ball of fire !!! [Big Grin]

You want entertainment?

Want fireworks?

How about a 150KW generator being "motorized" by commercial power???

Son of a bitch was bouncing around and putting on a show!

Had to sling someones ass for that one.
