I read Vic has been out birding lately. What do you use? Smith and Wesson rimfires with snake shot? .410 single shot? Air gun? If I know you at all, a 12 gauge is a "shoulder cannon".

But anyway, i love shooting doves. This year the majority I've shot have been those cool Eurasian collared doves. They are bacially a really big mourning dove with a tiny black ring going from one side of the neck to the other - wrapped around the back of the neck. The end of their tails in flight is squared kind of - not pointy like a mourning dove.

LOTS of yummy meat on those critters. If anyone is shooting a mess of doves and needs a super duper yummy recipe, let me know. My wifey makes a killer marinade that actually goes on dove kabobs after they have been grilled. ooooooo so yummy!

Hey Danny, yeah; the birds were flying like the old days. We stayed busy till the ammo ran dry,and if we had ten more boxes, we could have stayed busy till that was gone. Hundreds, upon hundreds of birds, from every angle and every elevation, was a blast.
I use a shotgun which is the exact model I used when I was 15, a Winchester model 37, 12 gauge single shot. I picked up a cherry one at a gun show five or six years ago,and it takes me back to my youth every time I carry it out hunting.
Every now and again, just as I could in my youth, I can take a shot at an oncoming bird, and if I miss, snatch the spare shell I keep between my middle and index finger of my support hand, make a reload, and kill that bird as it is going away. Not as deft as I once was,but now and again I can pull it off.
Nothing like a good dove hunt is there? Most relaxing hunting there is; you can shoot the shit, laugh and harrass each other for misses or praise for fine shots. No camo,no stalking or hiding, just pure shooting pleasure, I love it.
Not a lot of guys enjoy eating them, but Ive always been partial to them as well as my kids. Our favorite is dusted in flour, fried hot and fast, pull em out of pan and make cream gravy, place them back in pan, cover and simmer for another five minutes. Top toasted bread with a pile of doves and gravy and get messy....good stuff.

Tyler, Dan and I went out opening day near Florence. There weren't nearly as many dove as in years past. It took us 2 hours to limit out.
After limiting out in ten minutes one year I began taking along my 410 pistol to extend the shooting time. Lot's of fun.
I bone out the breast, cut it into small pieces, sautee them in butter with diced onions and crushed garlic and pour it over a bed of rice.

I like breasts mixed with chunks of steak marinated in beer for 30 minutes, and then grilled with onions and bell peppers, served on flour tortillas.

Vic missed? Is that what I read?

Good hunting. LB

You guys probably won't believe this, but Monday night I shot a banded dove. I knew that some states had started banding them a few years ago but had never seen or heard of one being killed. I called the number in and am waiting on the certificate giving me the information on the dove. If I knew how to post a picture on here I would.

I like to filet the breasts off, put cream cheese and a jalapeno between them, wrap them together with bacon and a toothpick and grill them.
