My friend Mert is in the Trauma center at Creighton hospital in Omaha. He was looking for something in a large cabinet. He pulled out a box that contained old fire crackers, and set it on the floor. As he turned back toward the cabinet, the fireworks exploded. Force of the explosion blew holes in Mert's leather shoes, his legs look like someone shot him several times with a shotgun, and I don't know anything more about his injuries yet. The explosion blew the front door of his house open, and bowed the metal overhead garage door. Law enforcement officials are investigating the incident.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Rich. Do they know why the fireworks went off? Old and unstable? I keep the kids' stuff that's left over each July 4 in the garage where it can get pretty cold and pretty warm. Maybe that's a bad idea.

Mert Barquist (sp) ? Dang sorry to hear it Rich. I talk to him on the phone once in a while when he is out here hunting chucks in the summer. I never have got together with him, but he always stops and sees some friends in Kaycee.

3 Toes,
Mert Bargenquast, yes. I knew he had been calling you on the phone, and has been wanting to meet you. The accident happened yesterday. Must have been while his wife was at work, because he was home alone when it happened. The fireworks were probably over twenty years old. I learned in bomb school that the flash powder in fireworks is very unstable. When I hear more about his condition I will post it here. They have him drugged down pretty good I think. He didn't know which hospital he was in when he called me this morning. He just wanted to get out of there.

Mert is back home now, and is taking antibiotics to ward off possible infection in his wounds. He has quite a lot of shrapnel in his legs, which is probably from various items that blew out of the cabinet. He said that he will have his wife E mail some photos to me. If he does, I will post a couple for you guys.

I'd like a logical explanation. Anybody? Static electricity? Spark from staples or nails in the box? The whole nine yards, all at once? I don't get it?

Good hunting. LB

edit: did he have some other bulk black powder in there? Did he drop it?

The fire marshall thinks that static electricity set it off. I had lunch with Mert today, and he remembers hearing a sort of "snap" sound just before the explosion. He showed me a piece of the steel cabinet he was cleaning out, and it was just a twisted triangular piece of steel. The man is lucky to be alive. Several folks around there are getting rid of their old fireworks now. I reckon that would be a good idea. [Wink]

Mert's entire body looks like a mess, but I couldn't convince him to drop his pants in the KFC parking lot today. I don't think anyone on this board is gonna believe that his private parts are black and blue unless we see a good photo of them. Am I correct? [Big Grin] Here is a photo of one of his arms.

Mule,
It was old firecrackers that were being stored in a cardboard box. Mert had taken the box out of the metal cabinet and sat it on the floor. As he turned around toward the cabinet again, the firecrackers exploded.

Some of the old fireworks(m80's etc) actually contained TNT. TNT becomes very unstable with time. The nitrates can 'sweat' from the initial compound and are very easily ignited (static shock). It sounds to me as if this was the case, because there seemed to be one big blast. Todays modern fireworks would have detonated in more of a chain, leaving some unignited.
Anyway, thats how it was explained to me by the guy who taught me to 'shoot' holes.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Rich. Glad he is still alive. Could have been much worse.

Old dynamite can sweat out its nitroglycerin and become unstable. I don't know if that component is in firecrackers or not.

Kokopelli,
That stuff had been stored for twenty years or more. Poor Mert surely isn't expected to remember how many of each firecracker size he had stuffed in there. There were some old firecrackers in there that went BOOM, he knows that for sure. [Big Grin]

I am fairly certain that the older m-80's were actually dynamite. At least thats what I was always told. That could explain the nitro.
Any munitions experts out there.

I've also heard the M-80 / nitro connection, hence my question. Glad he's going to be ok.

'Course it could have been worse.....kids could have found that box!!

There very well could have been some M80's in that box. I know there would have been if it was me buying the firecrackers. The bigger the better was my motto in my young and stupid days. I have moved most of my gun powder, primers and loaded ammo out of my outdoor shop and into a cabinet in my air conditioned basement. [Wink]
