Mexican Soldiers Enter Arizona, Briefly Detain Border Agent
Thursday , August 07, 2008

TUCSON, Ariz. —

Four Mexican soldiers crossed into Arizona and held a U.S. Border Patrol agent at gunpoint before realizing where they were and returning to Mexico, federal authorities said Wednesday.

The confrontation occurred early Sunday on the ****** O'***** ****** *********** , about 85 miles southwest of Tucson, in an area fenced only with barbed wire, said Dove Crawford, a spokeswoman for the Border Patrol.

The soldiers, outfitted in desert camouflage, pointed their rifles at the agent and shouted at him not to move, Crawford said. They lowered their weapons after about four minutes when the agent convinced them of who he was and where they were, she said. The soldiers then retreated into Mexico.

The Mexican government has sent soldiers north along sections of the border in efforts to tamp down drug-related violence.

State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos in Washington said the encounter "stemmed from a momentary misunderstanding as to the exact location of the U.S.-Mexican border."

Portions of the ****** O'***** *********** 's 75-mile border with Mexico have been reinforced with vehicle barriers or other fencing to keep out illegal immigrants and drug smugglers. But other areas on the *********** and other stretches of border either have only barbed wire or no markers at all, making it hard to distinguish the boundary.

"There are places where there are no markers, at least not easily found," said Lloyd Easterling, a Border Patrol spokesman in Washington. "There's no line painted in the sand or anything like that."

He added: "We're working with the Mexican government to make sure that this doesn't happen again. This can't be happening."

Mexican Embassy spokesman Ricardo Alday in Washington said in a statement that both countries are investigating.

"It seems that there are dissimilar versions of what happened, and both countries are trying to clarify it together," Alday said.

"Law enforcement operations have led, from time to time, to innocent incursions by both U.S. and Mexican law enforcement personnel and military units into the territory of both nations, and in particular along the non-demarcated areas of our border," he said.

T.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, the union for Border Patrol agents, said the incursions have created a disturbing pattern.

Bonner said there have been at least a half-dozen situations in recent years in which Mexican soldiers have entered U.S. territory and shot at Border Patrol agents.

"It's a minor miracle that none of our agents have been killed or seriously injured," he said.

"It's inexcusable to not know where the border is" when military units have global positioning capabilities, Bonner said.

The instances in which the Border Patrol strays into Mexico are few and far between, Bonner said.

And "we have no incursions with Canada," he added. "Absolutely none."

Thats why we need a fence and more armed agents. Armed as in big machine guns and lots of them.

The article is misleading, for one thing. I have been told that there is not anywhere along that section, where the border is not marked, and not double fenced. It has stone, or concrete oblisk monuments every so many yards, and they are all on the other side of the fence, so the fence (both fences) are 100% in U.S. territory.

Machine guns, I don't know, but a twelve foot fence would be a start.

Good hunting. LB

edit: between Sasabee and Lukeville, there are only two unmanned, legal crossing points. Any crossing of that border is deliberate. They need to pursue this incident.

Seems to be an awful lot of that going around these days. Some of those poor bastards are so deluded that they apparently think the border is along the Nebraska-Kansas state line. or, at least, it would appear that way.

LOL good one Lance! [Smile] They do make pretty cheap mechanics though. My smart and really good mechanic wanted over $600 to change my fuel pump & filter. I paid my $20 an hour painters to replace it for double their normal wage. Woo Hoo saved $500 even if it was un-American. Hey man, I got a family to feed! [Wink]

Yeah, Danny, but that was a job no American wanted to do. At least, for less than $600. LOL

I wonder if this would fly with the local game warden;

"........stemmed from a momentary misunderstanding as to the exact location of the GAME UNIT BOUNDRY".

Kokopelli,

We will test that when you get here. Just try setting a coyote trap 10 yards off of private property, on public land.

I know for a fact, that just a few years ago, there were at least two good dirt roads near me, that led into Mexico with out any fences, just a stone monument off of the side of the road. They are real easy to miss when you are heading south, looking for the border to start a mornings coyote hunt. Sometimes, you can hunt all morning, and never see the monument until you are making the drive back home at lunch time.

I've also been told, by very credible sources, that the Mexican Army has been found to escort large drug shipments into the US on many occasions. I'm betting these guys were there just to distract the Border Patrol Agent as to what was crossing in his area.

Where the event happened, Tim, both crossing points are enclosed cattle guards, so it would be very hard to just cruise through without being aware of the border. Also, there is a sign telling crossers they have 24 hours to report their entry to US Customs. The fence is good quality five(?) strand barb wire, but there are two fences close together and a dirt road on both side parallel to the fence; so I have been told? Kind of hard to miss?

Good hunting. LB

I was talking to some local BP Agents about this today, and they brought up a good question, that the Media seems to have left out.

"If it really was an accident, Why did the Agent report that the Mexican Army came back and did the same thing an hour later?"

Sounds like they need The Minutemen! Any volunteers? A show of hands, please.

Well I think we need to give Mexico one warning, and one warning only. Keep your military the hell off from U.S. soil or experience the full fury of our own damn military. We have bent over backward for Mexico way too long already. What has mexico ever done for us?

Rich,

They keep sending us a cheaper work force. Ohio is full of them, plus I have to compete with them in the construction trade.

I don't know why they would. Everyone knows they don't use the firearms they have now.

That's true about some of those BP agents. We got rousted real good down near Ocotillo, CA. Man those guys had no sense of humor at all. They accused us of going into Mexico illegally. They could catch us when we weren't in Mexico but they couldn't stop the illegals we saw coming out. I guess it was easier to harass us that day.
