PETA requests that Eight Belles jockey Gabriel Saez be suspended Story Highlights Eight Belles broke both front ankles while galloping after the Kentucky Derby PETA asks that Saez be suspended while Eight Belles' death is investigated Eight Belles was euthanized after she was injured following a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is seeking the suspension of Eight Belles' jockey after the filly had to be euthanized following her second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
Gabriel Saez was riding Eight Belles when she broke both front ankles while galloping out a quarter of a mile past the wire. She was euthanized on the track.
PETA faxed a letter Sunday to Kentucky's racing authority claiming the filly was "doubtlessly injured before the finish" and asked that Saez be suspended while Eight Belles' death is investigated.
"What we really want to know, did he feel anything along the way?" PETA spokeswoman Kathy Guillermo said. "If he didn't then we can probably blame the fact that they're allowed to whip the horses mercilessly."
Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones said the filly was clearly happy when she crossed the finish line.
"I don't know how in the heck they can even come close to saying that," Jones told The Associated Press on Sunday. "She has her ears up, clearly galloping out."
Guillermo said if Saez is found at fault, the group wants the second-place prize of $400,000 won by Eight Belles to be revoked.
Saez, a 20-year-old Panama native, was riding in his first Kentucky Derby. He frequently rides for Jones.
A call to the jockeys' room at Delaware Park, where Saez raced on Sunday, went unanswered.
Eight Belles, the first filly since 1999 to run in the Derby, appeared fine until collapsing while galloping out after the finish.
The letter to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority also sought a ban on whipping, limits on races and the age of racehorses, and a move to softer, artificial surfaces for all courses.

Any user group (hunters, fishermen, trappers) had best not underestimate the clout of the animal rights cult. The high profile organizations like PETA, ALF, and FFA are bolstered by political and funding support by millions of pet owners. I never thought I'd see the presence of these misguided NUTS in my small rural hometown, but they were here all along. Our local county commissioners, on the advice of our Animal Control director, approved the selling of unwanted dogs for medical research. All of the protocalls were in place to ensure the humane treatment of the dogs in the research. The money was needed by our Animal Shelter which was suffering from tremendous overcrowding. An A.R. group here in Michigan reared it's ugly head and proceeded to campaign against "the inhumane killing of pets for research." The usual misleading and untruthful pictorial ads resulted in the county commissioners reversing their decision to sell unwanted dogs for research. That "victory" has them firmly entrenched here, and it's only a matter of time before they jump on some other animal use activity. My guess is it will be something like the donkey basketball games or the horse pull at our county fair. This ongoing attempt to perceive and treat animals just like humans is only going to get more extreme.

It is now a felony in Utah to hit your animal. All of you who have a rolled up newspaper to slap sparky on the nose might be looking at some hard time.

PETA people are a lot like ALgore in that they don't practice what they preach. A little tid bit of fact: According to Virginia's Ag. and Consumer Services, PETA killed 97.4% of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006. They took in 3061 "companion animals" in '06 and of which they killed 2,981.
Talk out one side of thier mouth and lie out the other side! ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)

Here ya go Kelly. If this link doesn't make pete loving people stop sending money to PETA, then there's no hope.

Notice that in 07 PETA really stepped up to the plate and only killed 91% of the companion animals that they took in! ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)
