Truckers Slowing Down to Save Fuel
By JAMES MacPHERSON,AP
Posted: 2008-03-22 12:38:08
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Coast-to-coast trucker Lorraine Dawson says fellow drivers used to call her "Lead Foot Lorraine." But with diesel fuel around $4 a gallon, she and other big-rig drivers have backed off their accelerators to conserve fuel.

"I used to be a speed demon, but no more," said Dawson, based at Tacoma, Wash. "Most drivers have cut their speed considerably."

Dawson said she's cut her speed by five to 10 miles per hour to save money for her company. Many independent owner-operators have slowed even more, she said.

"My fiance is an owner-operator and he's been crying a lot about the price of fuel," Dawson said. "He's been slowing way down."

Truckers and industry officials say slowing a tractor-trailer rig from 75 mph to 65 mph increases fuel mileage by more than a mile a gallon, a significant bump for machines that get less than 10 miles per gallon hauling thousands of pounds of freight. Even sitting still with the engine idling, a rig gulps about a gallon of diesel every hour.

"We just can't afford it," Dawson said of diesel as she was topping off her fuel tanks at a Bismarck truck stop.

When she started driving trucks in 1997, diesel was about $1.97 a gallon, $2 a gallon cheaper than what she paid Wednesday in Bismarck. Rigs like hers have two fuel tanks, typically holding 300 gallons each.

One of my pet peeves is truckers passing on a grade, inching ahead of another two or three trucks and requiring ten miles to get it done.

Drives me nuts!

I-10 between Blythe and Phoenix. The right lane gets all tore up, so the trucks use the fast lane and tear it up too. Of course, I have heard they build the truck lane an inch thicker just because of the heavy loads? So, it doesn't take near as long to destroy the fast lane. Speaking of asphalt, probably not applicable to concrete?

Maybe TA knows about this?

Good hunting. LB

Years ago, truck drivers used to be the most courteous on the road. Not any more.

So, I had a conversation with one a while back. He claims that UPS, and FedEx, all the big companies, etc. have been hiring Russians and all kinds of foreigners for quite a while, for cheap, and those guys don't know jack about road courtesy. 'splains a lot.

Good hunting. LB

Most roads are the same thickness in both lanes.Up north most interstate roads run about 10"-12" thick...not sure about down south..
Been building roads over 20 years, you would think the fed.'s and state could come up with something better by now to make them last..

Usualy those truckers on the grade that are going slow is because they are heavier than the one passing them. It may seem like its a marginal gain and can be frustrating he has to take what opertunity is available.

To the truck driver whos doing the passing he is trying to make time especially if hes long haualling and if its a local, paid by the load under 150 mile runner hes doing it because hes trying to get the loads in a certain time frame. The less time it takes the more $$$$ per hr he makes.

75 is about as fast as I want to go in a big rig and 65 is plenty when loaded. What really drives me nuts is people text messaging and talking on their cell phone speeding up, slowingdown, speeding up,slowingdown. Its very hard to syncronize that with an 18 speed tranny...

And if you crash into one of these idiots and they get a good attorney with black belt in DOT rules they rake you over the coals, leave a bad mark on your record, or worse pull your CDL, then your kickin horse turds and the schmuck gets to go back doing what he does best...being an idot. If I dont kill him in the first place. 106,000 lbs is enough on my plate....

RedRabbit, It most likely will be a short downtrend. These guys aren't finished ripping us off yet. Maybe they want to make that Amero look inviting to us. With such a depressing subject, maybe this will cheer us up a little:

Tim,

Time will tell... I'm waiting for the pics to show up in my own e-mail.
Then I'll tell y'all a little story. [Wink]

If she was wet, it was on her breath, 'cause she wasn't long from the teet.

Leonard,

It said "failed" after I sent, so I doubted it made it.

If your going to "out me" over there, don't forget to mention I love my .308. [Big Grin]

Even though I am way under qualified, I was doing "ADC" work, so screw them anyways. [Roll Eyes]

I'm already "pre-banned" from there, what are they gonna do to me?

Krusty -

P.S. You'll have to copy what they say, back here, 'cause I can't even read that board anymore.

You must be kidding? HM is full of CG rejects, including yours truly. Using a cannon like a 308 on a pregnant bitch would be equiv to farting in a crowded elevator, stuck between floors. Not only you, but your children, and your children's children would be banned. [Smile] Might even get you evicted and your vehicle impounded? They have that power; God thing, ya know? Enough reasons?

However, we shall alert the Media.

Good hunting. LB

"Using a cannon like a 308 on a pregnant bitch would be equiv to farting in a crowded elevator, stuck between floors. Not only you, but your children, and your children's children would be banned. [Smile] "

No worries then.

I have no children. [Wink]

Heck, I knew you were banned, among others here, what part seemed like kidding?

No need to alert the media, as I said in reference to the topic name, it's not "much of a feat", that I pulled off.
And I would NOT expect anyone, but me, to be thrilled by it.

TLB,

Yeah... well dude seemed fully unenthusiastic, and unappreciative, on the phone! [Eek!]

But thanks for the "atta boy", just the same. [Smile]

He also seemed miffed that we would not spend the whole four days calling his place (or travel on up to Elk), and that we had the audacity to secure permissions to other properties in the surrounding area.

With a range of a few square miles, at the least, and only 700 acres of land, his coyotes aren't only his.

And he's in no threat there, the place is flat out lousy with deer and turkey, despite a few coyotes on the game cams.

(*It was a seriously trippy phone call?)

I don't think you missed much dude. [Roll Eyes]

(*Because of scheduling, Red had to follow me over a day later, and I went ahead and scouted, so we were feeding two trucks (one pulling the travel trailer) and making an already VERY long drive... heading into worse weather than we were getting at the tail end of it... didn't seem like a good plan.)

I swear, there was only one real good stand, on his whole place, where we had the advantage.

My brother and I are struggling with that, "what's truly worth sitting on?".
I've gotten to the point that I'll pass on five mediocre stands and walk a mile to one really good one (and 7/8ths of a mile is about where Red calls bullshit on me).
It's become quite a bone of contention, to the point that it cut our trip short. [Frown]

We don't have enough data and experience of our own, to really know.
And then there's Bryan's great quote, "did you just experience the rule, or the exception of the rule..."

Example: We called a blank stand, on another place I secured and scouted on Friday, waited about twenty minutes, then hopped 400 yards over the rolling wheat field hill (to scout further, and decided to call), and called a coyote (way too close for me, ordinarily, to make a second stand).

(*Which only added to the disagreement, and friction, between Red and I)

And called is a relative term, most of the coyotes we saw this weekend didn't seem to be "called" (or were flat un-callable), their attention was "vague", and they weren't committed and coming in on a string for sure.
(*One "appeared" as if by magic, sitting there right in front of us, 75 yards out in the sage brush)

But, like I said on the other site, I did enjoy myself, I totally appreciate the invitation/request, and considering my lack of real qualification to do real ADC work (which I did not misrepresent), and the odds we were up against, I feel like we did a good job.

Though, I do feel like the more I learn, and the more experience I get, the stupider I am. [Big Grin]

We made some good sized blunders and had some equipment problems, that cost us some coyotes. And, more so, the lack of a common perspective on "how things should be done", have me really second guessing myself.

Maybe that's a good thing, feeling stupid? Working past it will make me better at it.

But I'll tell you what... today, I'm glad the "season" is over, 'cause I am ready to take a break for a while.

I always said "I would see how I felt after I finally killed one" as far as whether or not I would "keep trying"... and I'm still struggling with that (*I came to the determination recently, that I think I've killed enough deer, at two of them, so I'm wondering how this second coyote is going to effect me?)

When I was racing motorcycles I had a saying we called "Stinky's Razor", about success and winning...

The first time, was luck.

The second time, was a coincidence.

It's not until you win, three times, that you can claim to have anything to do with it.
[Wink]

I should probably stick it out, until I win, one more time, before I make any decisions. [Smile]

Well that sounds disappointing from what was presented to you. By the looks of his pictures, I sure thought he had a lot more land and better areas to make stands. I know you battled some tough conditions this past weekend, that and work, is why I didn't try to get up there as well. I thought I would give it a try in the next week. I'll let you know how it turns out, and if I get anything different from him after a phone call.

TLB,

I wasn't disappointed in the area, as much as we were by his attitude.
As we all know the written medium doesn't lend itself to clear understanding (ie; his post on the H-W), but hearing his voice did.

Talking to him ahead of time was nice, and he and his wife were friendly enough in person... maybe I just caught him at a bad time?
And maybe to a professional outfitter, "only one coyote" is poor results?

We were out of our element, in the steeps there, for sure, so maybe you'll make more sense of it.
And hopefully the weather will treat you kinder. [Smile]

If I can be of any help, as far as "scouting notes" shoot me an e-mail. [Smile]

If you find my shooting sticks, and they haven't been run over, lemme know, eh?
