Seems like everywhere I turn, somebody is just getting, in the middle of, or finally beginning to recover from the flu - the full blown upper respiratory, fever, body aches, this-shit-can-kill-you flu. As offered in the past, I have something that will kick its butt in no time and get you back on your feet.
Elderberry extract.
When it comes to folk remedies, I'm the biggest skeptic there is, but when a local doctor began having her patients use this stuff to control seasonal allergies, and one of those patients told me to try it and I did, it very quickly got my attention.
A year ago, at about this time, the cedar trees began pollinating and I was BAD with allergies - eyes swollen shut, wheezing, hives. I was miserable. I as talking zyrtek, flonase, loratadine and staying indoors with air cleaners going full bore with no relief. Within two days of taking the elderberry, I was symptom free and using just the flonase. I've since used nothing but elderberry and only up the dose on days when I begin sneezing.
The best thing about this stuff is that it has some pretty damned impressive antiviral properties that they're just now testing. But, I've seen accounts where it has reduced flu symptoms to an average of <2 days, has been used to treat herpes, is being tested as an AIDS treatment and is being used to treat West Nile Virus in horses. A component in the extract inhibits the ability of viruses to infect prospective host cells.
Where I work, we had three letter carriers present with flu symptoms last Wednesday. I told all three to begin taking this stuff. Two began taking the prescription stuff that costs an arm and a leg. The third bought a bottle of extract. As of this morning, he's doing the best of all three, says he feels great, and has just a little bit of a cough.
I've been taking a maintenance dose of the stuff all winter and have gone the entire season without a cold, the flu, anything at all.
Just a suggestion to those who don't like taking drugs... this is a remedy that was first found by the Plains ******* and has been used for centuries to treat colds, flu, sinus infections, constipation, hypertension and allergies. Buy the concentrated stuff and use it according to the instructions. I get mine at a health food store and they told me the opther day that they can't keep it on the shelf this year. No side effects or bad interactions, so it's pretty safe stuff. Hope this helps if you're hurting.

Cdog911, Thanks for the info. I hadn't experienced allergies for about 20 years. Then last year the pollen count went from about 300 particles to about 5,000 particles per cubic meter. I went through about the same thing you went through. I'm going to try to locate some of that elderberry extract this week and be prepared.

Found this piece at WebMD on the stuff, FWIW.

Between the real flu and stomach flu, I think I'm the only one I know that hasn't been down with something around here. (knock on wood)

Thanks Lance, I may give it a try. Thanks for giving credit and reference as to where you got the remedy from, for without that I am sure the whole read would have been a worthless bit of time and effort.

Thanks Leonard, but I am really not looking forward to the 5 pages of stats and figures as to why it does not work in other climates and conditions

Lance, I read up on it like you suggested. It seems to have other properties beyond the anti-viral ones.
I hit Vitamin Cottage at lunch time and they had 8 oz. bottles of extract on sale for $16. My backwoods Arky sis swears by Elderberry, so I'll give it a shot.
Thanks for passing this on.

That's a pretty good price, Tom, and when compared against the Rx's from the doc, a good buy all around. Hope it works for you. But, be forewarned, I don't think it counteracts gravity, so be careful not to fall again.
Randy, no problem. I figured I'd better include some citations as those are pretty bold claims for me to make all by myslef here. By the way, if it works for you, the elderberry gets the credit. I had nothing to do with that either. [ February 26, 2008, 12:50 PM: Message edited by: Cdog911 ]

I just bought a new bottle the other day. 100 575mg capsules for $11.39. Don't know if it works, but I sure don't think it can hurt. I take one capsule morning and night.

Tim,
What I buy is liquid. You say you're getting it in capsule form? What specific ingredient is in the capsule? Sounds like a great deal if it's the same thing.

Each capsule is 460mg of Sambucos nigra (berry) and 115 mg Sambucos nigra (flower) And it is bottled by Solaray.
Don't worry Leonard, the guy I get it from is names Jesus, he has a store on this side and even speaks good English!

I bought a bottle yesterday. After reading the Journal of Medicine I came to the conclusion that only Elderberry Extract works? Anyway, that's what I bought.
It taste like Port to me....one of my favorite drinks.

Cindy, I just checked our pollen fore ast fiuguring we were due for cedars to be cranking up and they already are. At the levels we had today, I'm usually taking four different drugs to just knock the edge off the watering eyes and sneezing, but I haven't had so much as a tickle yet. So far, this stuff is a miracle. Saturday, the levels are forecast to be nearly twice as high as they are now, so I guess I'll know for sure then....
Hope it works as well for you, if you can find it up there.
