Any coyote hunters in S.W. Missouri?
Here is an email I got:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hello Al,
I own a farm 60 acre farm in S.W. Missouri. I raise chicken pullets in 2 large cage houses and am having a problem with coyotes. They are not able to get into the houses they have just become a nuisance. Every year they get worse and their population increases. We used to have some old timers that would come out and run their dogs and help to control them but they have either died or have lost interest.
Do you know any hunters in the Joplin Missouri area that might be interested in helping out?
I have had to many sleepless nights and am afraid that my dogs will be their victim one of these mornings.
I appreciate any help you can send my way.
Thanks Mark
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I am in California (the land of the fruits and nuts) and can't help. Maybe someone here could help out.
Send me an email and I will give you Mark's email address so you can contact him.

Thanks for thinking of us, Al. I bet we have a couple Missouri hunters that could handle a little coyote problem?
Anybody?
Good hunting. LB

That would be a long haul for Shaw for a couple coyotes. His front yard may be in MO, but his back fence is danged near IA. I'll transfer the text of that message to the Midwest forum and see if we can't generate a little help for the guy.

Lance, are you leaving Andy out on purpose because he's a seventeen nut, or because he lacks street cred?

Check it out, you say four hours is a long ways, and yet how far is McNeal?
I'm a little surprised? I didn't know it took four hours to drive from one end of MO to the other?
Good hunting. LB
edit: did I say MO because I don't know how to spell it?

I'm farther away than Randy - maybe. Sounds like Steve would be the closest, maybe Baldknobber (I'll assume that's a Branson area add'y).
7 or 8 hours for me, without looking it up. Could combine it with a trout fishing trip to Taneycomo or something I guess.
LB, with the exception of Texas (maybe) the diagonal drive I have to take across Missouri is the most time consuming part of a trip from here to California. Sure is pretty, though. Trees and hills, etc...
The only good thing about driving through Texas is the courtesy shown when you catch up to a native on the road. I assume they still pull over like they used too. Others could learn from that.

shaw is far North Central.
Criner is South West as you can get in MO and still be a resident of the state.

I'm 3 hours away, and Criner is about half that distance. Brad Harris who used to work for Lohman Calls used to live in Neosho when their office was located there. Dont know if he still lives there.

Isn't it likely that a trapper could help as much as, or more than, a recreational caller?
One trapper could have a dozen sets working, 24/7, whereas a caller can only call a stand here and there (time and space wise).
My bet is, there's a trapper who drives by now, wishing he could get on that property.
It seems to me, a trapper who also calls, and could offer a two pronged approach, would be the best of both worlds. Perhaps the Missouri Trappers Association would be helpful in finding the right individual to assist with this situation?

Krusty,
The rancher has dogs and I am not sure he would want traps on his property. I don't personally know any trappers and didn't think of going that way.

Al,
Traps don't automatically mean bad news for domestic dogs.
With 24 hour checks, and some care in choosing the proper "tools" for the job, the coyotes could be trapped without posing an undo risk to said dogs.
Even if traps weren't used as part of the solution, the Trappers Association might still have been helpful in finding an experienced person to help this guy. Most good ADC professionals are also well known for their trapping skills.
Me... I don't personally know anyone who can actually call coyotes with anything even close to consistency, so I wouldn't think of going that way.
I'd be very interested in reading how Cal, Wiley E, or Randy, would approach a "problem" like this one?
