I am a little baffled about stores, like in Arizona, where it is common to carry a side arm openly and many have a concealed weapon permit. How do they get away with the signs saying no firearms? What are you forced to do, leave your gun in the car? How is that supposed to keep you safe?

In short, I would like some real life experiences from those in the 40 states that allow CCW, exactly how you handle those gray areas?

Good hunting. LB

LB, Ive discovered that CCW laws vary from state to state, and sometimes town to town.

In Missouri, any property (store) owner, has the right to put up an approved sign and deny CCW on their property. If you get caught, you will be asked to leave. If you leave, its over. If you refuse, its an infraction, low misdemeanor, and a $100 fine. Subseqent violations get rougher.

However, I carry almost all the time and I go by the rule of "concealed means concealed."

I may be wrong, but when Kansas recently passed its CCW law, it was cited that we were one of only two remaining states that didn't allow concealed carry. I, too, have seen that figure - 40 - cited recently, but I think the number is now 49.

This state is covered with those red circles with the slash across the gun. Some local businesses refused to put them up. Some put them up and took them down when people quit doing business with them.

After the VA Tech incident, I think the argument became apparant to a lot of people that "No guns" really is synonymous with "Free Fire Zone". I don't have a CC permit and may never, but our law is pretty much in line with what Andy describes.

In Az. many places of bussiness post signs but they really mean nothing if your weapon is concealed they have yet to search me upon entry.many people still use the open carry in a bad situation the bad guys would target them first, better to keep em guessin.
Court hosues , schools and airports are another story , that is the law and I would not violate it.

Yeah, okay Paul. What I want to know, at those court house and schools, do you turn around and remove a piece from a holster and slide it under the seat, and depend on someone not observing or breaking into your vehicle? Of course, I have seen that GMC, so the odds are slim that anyone would want to steal it. [Smile]

I mean, what exactly are the options? Open carry is growing out of favor?

Believe it or not, that is one of the reasons I am interested in moving.

Good hunting. LB

edit: of course, Higgins doesn't need a gun, but what about the rest of us wimps?

In Spokane, I can't speak for the west side of the state, the courthouses have lockers for your sidearm. I was told by a LEO that you could carry on school grounds if it is concealed, but I have not looked at the law myself.

In Oklahoma it's pretty much the same. Business' that have the sign up you simply can't carry in.
Of course as Andy said "concealed means concealed".

In Oklahoma we can drive onto school property to pick up or drop off kids but with the exception of hunters safety course or LE no firearm of any kind is allowed on school property.

They're still fighting the law or ruling about guns in your car on private property. This could get interesting.

In Colorado, when a building owner posts a "no firearms" sign you must comply. Failure to comply puts your CCW in jeopardy.
