Today we had my dog, Ashley, put down.

 -

She was a really good dog, she didn't hunt because she was scared of guns, but she was the best pet a guy could ask for.
She stayed in the yard with no fence, she never barked unless there was a good reason and when she did she looked like she meant it.
In here later years she took up howling with me, as I worked on calls, but as her hearing failed she gave it up.

In the ten years before I took up hunting, and stopped climbing, she was almost always my companion in the woods.
I dragged her pretty far up in the rocks, more than a few times, over boulderfields, and through the brush.
I put a lot of miles on that dog, or she put a lot of on miles on me, sometimes it was hard to tell.
She was always happy to go, and left resting for when we got home.

 -

She had 16 good years, but damnit, dogs just don't last long enough.
We never had any kids, so she was kinda "my girl".

I'm really gonna miss her. [Frown]

Sorry to hear that Krusty. Some people think it's corny but dogs do become part of the family and in some cases like a child to the owner. Before my wife and I had kids our dog was our baby and like you we had to put ours down. It's rough.

Me neither. Nanc wouldn't let me get another dog after Red drowned in the pool. Couldn't stand losing her. She was sixteen. Me and my son and grandson buried her in the hills, not a dry eye in the bunch. In her whicker bed, she was asleep.

If Vic would ever turn loose of bootsie, she is a spitting image of Red, except for the dark saddle.

I think I need a dog.

Sorry to hear of your loss, K.

Good hunting. LB

Aww Krusty... this is such sad news! I'm so sorry to her that your lil girl went home. Many years ago I had to have two put down at the same time... since then... I feel for you... it's not an easy thing to do... [Frown] but it was the most gracious thing you could do!

Sorry to hear about that Krusty. Our little rattie is a pain in the ass some days, but he forgives my transgressions moreso than any other living being in this world, and that sure counts for something. I'm sure your girl was the same way.

Krusty sorry to hear of your loss pal, we lost one of are dogs not to long ago and I feel your pain .
i hope your feelings of loss go soon, and the memories of you dog last you your life time

Some say 16 years is a long time to have a dog, but to me it was a short time to have a friend..

There is a dog pound out there with a loving dog looking for a new friend .

Thanks guys,

I am not just sad, I feel glad that I had her, and proud that I gave her a good life, but I do miss her.

Life is a mix, of good and bad, I know that.
It's the bad times that make the good times feel good, and the good times that make the bad times feel bad.

Yin and yang.

I am glad I was so happy, that I can feel this bad, I truly am blessed.

Good Tribute, Krusty.

Had a dog like that myself once, only she was a huntin' machine. She went 14+ years. My second water dog. "Once in a lifetime dog." my Dad kept saying throughout her life. I didn't believe him at the time. I do now, 3 dogs later.

Good Memories.

I have actually been fully blessed, I have had three "once in a lifetime dogs".

When I was 9, my parents divorced, and I ended up with one of my Dad's hunting dogs (sort of as a parting gift).
Boo was a fully trained (upland and water) german shorthair pointer, with him and my BB gun I learned to hunt.
He would quiver with excitement at the sound of a carton of BBs, bring back the biggest piece he could find of everything I shot, and gave me dirty looks when I missed. [Smile]
Boo lasted 'til I was 18, I come home from high school one fall day, and he had dug a hole behind the garage, laid down in it, and died.

A few years later I found Bart, sitting under my motorcycle in the bank parking lot.
Bart was a funny little mutt, beagle and pug?
I lived in a little apartment, and he fit my life perfectly.
He rode on a patch of shag carpet on the tank of my motorcycle.

Bart was flat out the smartest dog I ever knew, he could carry out complex tasks and tricks, I swear he understood 70 words and 15 hand signals.
He would break into nonstop bay-howling at the words "God bless America" or a few bars of the song. He was hilarious at the racetrack during the morning address. And would stop at the word "Amen". [Big Grin]

At 28 pounds like a buff jack russel, he had the heart of a giant, but not a Napolean complex. He would have made a great tolling dog.

He lasted 16 years himself.

Now I have the world's stupidest dog, a two year old rednosed pitbull... 100 pounds of stupid in a 60 pound dog, and somebody put a nickle in him and wound the spring way too tight.

He's a good dog, but he's no "once in a lifetime dog".

Bofire,

That dog of yours was looking pretty old, the last time I saw him.
If he's no longer with us, I return the condolences.
