TA17 . . . I was with the Phoenix Pd during the early fifties and crossed paths a time or two with Ira Hayes, one of the participants in the second raising of the flag. Ira was a Pima ****** and had developed an alcohol addiction. The PD booked him a number of times . . . mostly to keep him safe while he sobered up. He was walking within the *********** , headed home after a night of partying, and fell face first into a shallow irrigation ditch. Drowned in about three inches of water. Sad.
