Has anybody ever tried to tame a coatimundi?? Interesting looking beasts, and I was wondering if they would make a good pet??

I had a frend in Wilcox that had one adopt him. This old man lived in a travol trailer at the edge of the farms and at the base of the mountans. This cuati chewed a hole in the storage compartment to get to his crackers Then eventualy would come in wial he was eating for handouts. One word to the wise Theas little criters can and will tear up a dog. Thay are worse than a big cat for the infections from the cuts and scrapes of the clows.
Good luck if you catch one I think you would be better of with a javalina. easier to catch and train I have had a few pigs thay make the coolest pets

That's a very uncommon animal, north of the border. Don't know where you would find one?
Good hunting. LB

Actually, they're fairly common in S.E. Arizona if you get up to the right elevation. I've never called one in but run into them now and then. Usually in groups of about 5 to 8. I know that Ringtails (Miner's Cats) tame up and was curious about Coatimundis.

Bob Hernbrode, the fish and game guy in Payson during the mid-sixties had a younmg coati he called Chulo. It looked to be about half grown and was friendly and curious when I saw it. Hung out in the front yard of his Payson home. Do not recall or never knew the circumstancies of how the critter made it to Payson.

Chulo;..........isn't that Spanish for??.....never mind. Where do you guys come up with these names??
I'm thinking that a full grown coati sticking it's head out of the door to greet the bible thumpers who ignore the signs would be kind of cool. Sort of a ferret from hell on steroids. (I work night shift & got woke up today).

Hey Koko, Chulo a Spanish word meaning "punster or joker" such perhaps giving a clue to the personality of the critter. You probably know that the coati is one of the three members of the raccoon family, the third being the cacomistle or ringtailed cat. The three may have been linked together because of their ringed tails.

I think the word you guys are thinking of is "Cholo". It refers to the darker, more 1nd1an ethnic groups, as opposed the the lighter skinned "Castillian-blooded" class of Mexicans. Mexicans use it as a cultural derrogatory to describe inferior or "lower class" people. [ July 17, 2007, 10:08 AM: Message edited by: NASA ]
