Been looking at some campfire pits recently and wanted to see what everyone's favorites were. Has anyone heard of these? www.freedomcampfire.com ? I think Cabela's ***** them

I've got a half sized barrel that I use from time to time.
Most of the time it sits out in the hen house with a couple a of flakes of straw and gets used as a nesting box.

Out in the desert, like Glamis, they use the tub of a washing machine. With all the holes in the sides it actually works pretty good.
Whatever happened to a circle of rocks? LB

I have always found the circle of rocks easier to poor the gasoline on. But these days with the price of gas I might as well use a Fiver to start the blaze instead. Edit to add: It just doesn't seem as campy to me to have the fire contained in some nouveau basin. [ June 11, 2007, 06:40 PM: Message edited by: smithers ]

Out in the sand dunes, a fire pit can be unsightly and last a long time, after you are gone, so that's one of the reasons for the washer tubs. They also allow air circulation via the afore mentioned holes.
Me? I'd rather scoop out a depression and edge it with rocks.
Good hunting. LB

Scary (true) campfire story;
Many years ago I took my family on an opener deer hunt / camping trip in the Stanislaus Nat. Forest in Calif. We found a nice campsite where others had camped before, complete with fire ring. Camp was set up, wood gathered, and practice shots taken. Things were looking pretty good. On a whim, since we were going to be there several days, I decided to dig the fire pit out ......... and found a half full bottle of propane someone had buried under the ashes.
