Well this is the time of year that not much seems to be going on with the hunting boards . Thought I’d post something. About 6 weeks ago my old buddy Ben passed away after twelve years of being the best dog I ever had he was a great companion and family friend.. I had been fascinated watching Professor Higgins dog Mattie on the up close and personal video. She is not a particularly large dog, which was encouraging to me as I wanted to get a dog but not a large one. After some pondering , and finding cur dogs to be much too large and probably a better attack dog than a decoy, I settled on a Red Heeler as they are small enough to be around the house and about a sturdy as a dog gets. Very agile and fairly fast.

I’m now wondering if the make ADD drugs for dogs she is a handful but very bright and training well just not focused on any one thing very long. Anyone with any advice on training for coyote decoy detail please feel free to chime in .we are working on basic commands so far she will give me here attention on command but not for a long period. But she looks me right in the eye . She sits , lays down , we are currently working on stay .She is 13 weeks old and wont be going into the field for some time . hope to have her a least able to go and sit on stand with me by Sept / Oct. I will post a pic if I can get photo bucket to work I’m not the best with computer truth be known I’m a bit of a retro grouch and am not sure if this tech stuff works for us or the other way round.

Paul; Nice looking dog.
Everyone likes to train there dog a little differently, and each dog has his own personality but i'll give you some tips on what i do to train mine.
I got a vidio years ago on how to train dogs to respond to hand signals, the vidio was by an animal trainer that trains dogs for hollywood movies..
Before you start the training sessions everyday just let the dog out of his kennel and just let him do what dogs do, weither it be running around the yard or what not.
Keep the lessons short about 15-30 min a day. The dog needs to learn his name and to come when called, you may need a long lease for this. Once the dog learns to come when called start useing a squeaker bulb or a hand signal when calling him. For come just hold out youre hand with fingers faceing up and palm towards you, and move hand toward you and useing the command to come at same time. For stop just turn youre hand the oppisite way, palm faceing dog and command stop.
To speed the learning process along i use some cooked chicken for a reward. You only want to tare off a very small piece about the size of a 22 cal. bullet or smaller. You don't want to feed him just give him a taste of it. This will keep his attension and only reward him when he has done a task correctly. If you use a squeaker for the come command then use one squeak only...
I have used these techneques on a yard dog and on a pheasant hunting dog. Both dogs learned very quickly and i was able to control them with just my hand signals by the end of summer.. Good luck.. T.A.

What if I told you, the left wing and right wing both belong to same bird!
