This weekend was our last chance hunt for a buck, and my first season of deer hunting, so I was gung-ho to get one.

I got mine Friday, hunting all by myself, using the Mosin Nagant and factory 180gr RNSP's.

I am usually "pretty good at it" when I try new things...

Is this a good deer? [Smile]

Nice buck Krusty. For your first deer, with your new rifle, you did a bang-up job.

You obviously went a little east of Seattle to get into the whitetail.

What did you do with the cape? Several local taxidermists were buying mature whitetail and mule deer capes. I sold a whitetail cape last week for $45.

Thanks, everyone.

I feel a little proud, but mostly thankful.
Just like with predator calling, I have had a lot of help learning how to deer hunt.
Most of all though, I'm thankful I got lucky.

I went to the woods, a day ahead of my Dad and my brother, just to poke around and scout some new ground.
I was scouting calling areas, when this buck stumbled onto me.

To answer Lonny's question, I was very near Idaho, and not too much farther from Canada.

I'm not real happy with my rifle, it's damn lucky it's not hanging from a tree branch right where I found my buck.
That is absolutely the last time it goes into the woods without optics!

Leonard,

You're right, just "tracking and shooting" is way easier than aiming, and thinking, too much.

Pretty darned nice buck Krusty. Especially for your first. And don't worry about the luck involved, a good part of deer hunting is being in the right place at the right time.

The only thing that guarantees "luck" in deer hunting is perseverance, time afield, and hard work. Keep at it and your "luck" will surely continue.

K, you don't "look" like I had imagined you? I sorta figured you as a preppy Robb K, but straight. [Smile]

Hey, I'd tag that buck, any day.

Good hunting. LB

Krusty, down here in South East Texas where a big buck is 140 Lbs. That Deer of yours looks like a Cow Elk with Deer horns. Job well done. Looks like you will have enough Thanksgiving back strap for twenty people.

Thanks again, everyone. [Cool]

Tripp,

I am not "worried" about the luck, I just know it's part of the reality.

I didn't rattle him in, or bring him down a scent line (even though the rut was in full swing), like you say I just happened to be there when he came along.
If there is anything can be attributed to "learned skills", it's that I was stalking as quietly as possible, and that I saw him before he saw me.
And that was really a matter of timing, he had other things on his mind that day, two weeks ago he'd have never let me find him.

The other reason I am not very full of myself is, on the way back to get my buck, we saw this guy's big brother (I durn near ran over him and the doe he chased across the road, with his nose up her butt).
And the following day when Red and I went back, we saw one even bigger yet (again, too close to the road to shoot).

Leonard,

I thought you'd seen pictures of me before?

Nope, I don't look anything, like any kind, of Robb K.

Ronnie,

That comes as a huge suprise to me, I thought Texas was where whitetails were big?

The backstraps weigh 22 pounds, that'd feed a few people alright.

It was all I could do to park him in a cool spot while I went for help. [Big Grin]

I could hardly wait to share my success with all of you, part of it belongs to you guys too.

Thanks so much!

Here's another picture, it was lost in electronic limbo, somewhere between Red's phone and my e-mail.

It shows the rack, and the size of the deer better.

 -

We hunt out of Jim's place, he's a logger, a trapper, a gunsmith/trader, and an excellent host.

He can also drag a deer like a bulldozer. [Wink] He'd chuckle, and pat me on the back, "You rest if you need to", as I huffed and puffed just to hold onto one antler and still stay out of his way.

Here's a picture taken out back at Jim's place.

 -

I wish I'd gotten more pictures, but with where he's shot they wanted to get him open and make sure he was "clean".
The (obvious) shot went through and through, clean as could be, without even hitting a rib.

At that point, I was saving a wounded deer from getting away... even after autopsy I wasn't convinced the less than obvious shot had killed it... so to hit it on the run, at all, was a stroke of luck, to me.

Again, thanks everyone. [Smile]
