I never did catch the answer to this one either...

I couldn't find the thread either...

Seems like there was a thread not so long ago about why a coyote would have puppies so late in the year. Tom and Rich seemed to indicate it was a perfectly simple reason. Tim thought it was because of prude mamas. I don't think I ever got the real answer.

Still curious in Englewood...

I forgot all about that one too.

We all know coyotes are monestrus. But certain conditions can trigger an extended estrus, and even multiple estrus. The males sperm production, which is nill between May and November, is timed to accomodate this condition. The males peak sperm production is at it's highest the end of Feb and begining of March. But it's still at the half-way point in April, with termination in May.

Copulation usually occurs in Feb/Mar. If the female is killed in March, the male can still locate and breed another female, after a couple weeks courtship.

Both M/F coyotes can breed at about 10 months, but normally don't. An uncourted female can re-start estrus within weeks of cycle completion if pressured by a male, or extend estrus if encountering a male near the end of her cycle. Coyotes do not immediately begin copulating upon meeting, as is the case with domestic canines. Coyotes traditionally court for 2-3 months before mating. But in late season encounters this courtship is reduced to 1-2 weeks.

If the male breeds another female in late April, they will not have a litter until the end of July or first of August. That would almost guarantee a wet bitch in Oct.
