Vern Howey was supposed to give a calling seminar in Broken Bow, NE this weekend. The NE Fur Harvesters got a call Saturday morning that Vern wouldn't make it. Seems he had to go to the hospital for a liver transplant! I couldn't get any more details.

Let us know if you hear more, I got to meet him and visit with him just a couple of months ago at the ATA convention. He's a hell of a nice fellow, I wish him the best of luck.

Hope everything works out for Vern...

I sure hope so too. Had the pleasure of eating dinner with Mr. Howey one night, years ago. He struck me as a very nice fellow.

I'm thinking positive here. If he went for a liver transplant, then hopefully that means he's been on a waiting list for a while and his new liver became available this weekend. Which, in turn, means his life just got better. Never had the chance to meet him yet, but I've always heard good things about him and hope for the best for him.

Lance, that's what I am thinking. When the hospital calls and says "Your liver's here", you just drop everything and run!
I just hope everything went 100% as planned.

Yeah, hope it all works out for him? Even with a transplant, they need to take anti rejection drugs for the rest of their lives. The two reasons (needing a new liver) that come to mind are hepatitis and heavy drinking. There seems to be a lot more in need of a transplant, than what is available? Many people seem sure that juvenile stem cell or umbilical cord research holds the answer, but adult stem cell therapy appears to have a promising future; at least in some circles?
The main thing is, Vern's number has been drawn, and that's something that never happens for some people.
Good hunting. LB

I called Vern's cell and left a message wishing him well for whenever he felt well enough to listen to his voice mail. He called me back this afternoon and said that it was Dirk Miller that went in for a transplant. Vern simply took another job in Idaho and had to cancel his Nebraska engagement. He's alive and well and chasing coyotes.

Wheew! There's one rumor that I'm glad to see cleared up! I tried to call Vern myself but couldn't get thru.

Good for Vern. I don't know Dirk Miller, but hope he comes out good too.

Dirk Miller is a veteran trapper, with a book or two under his belt. He was scheduled to give a demo on predator trapping at the NFH convention.

Oh? Really? You expect us to believe that, eh?Your credibility is shot, Tom.

You know, I tried to call Higgins Saturday morning when I was told about Vern. Couldn't raise him either. Then I remembered he was out scouting a camp site.

Good to hear. Hope the other fella is doing well, too. Tough row to hoe, but it means a better life ahead for him.
(That's one more.)

Dirk is a standup guy and makes some wondeful lures for coyotes. He knows the trapping game real well and his bobcat pee is top notch!!!!
Posted by Rich Higgins (Member # 3) on October 11, 2006, 12:20 PM:
Hi Gary. How does Dirk's bobcat pee differ from others?
Posted by coyote whacker (Member # 639) on October 11, 2006, 01:21 PM:
Don't know Gary, but his bobcat pee is just that 100% bobcat, many aren't giving you bobcat for 20.00 a gallon for sure. Also Dirks process of collecting gives you the cleanest purest urines I have come across in 26 years of trapping. His coyote pee is top notch as well. There is a differance in urines collected all times of the year and what diets the animals are fed.
Urine isn't just urine, there is a differance in quailty and how it is handled and collected.

Yep, I've heard some interesting stories about pee collecting and what is actually in the gallon jug that you buy. Ed Sceery has a couple of good stories about that.
