I'm going to order a box of cigars in the next week or two. Supply is getting low. Going to splurge on some nice ones. Whatchyall been smoking lately? Thinking I want a Churchill, or maybe even larger, and my preference runs towards maduros but I'm game for anything.
Fixing to light up a TTT robusto maduro momentarily that has been in the humidor for about a year now, m'self. Pouring a nice slug of good Irish whiskey to go with it. Life is good!

Try some Licenciados. Not real expensive but a great cigar for the buck. If you don't like them after you buy them, let me know and I'll buy what you have left.

I dont know if they are up to your standards or not Dave, but I have been smoking good ones IMO.
Thanks btw, for turning me on to CI. They kick ass.
My wife bought me a box of CAO Sopranos Edition. I think they are pretty damned good. Pricy, but good. Vic had one recently, maybe he will comment. Good medium full, lots of smoke, some spice, no harsh at all.
Also smoking some Carlos Torano Signature. Same strength but less spice.
Carlos Torano Exodus 1959. Like a chocalate bar. Heavy maduro. Starts off spicy and goes into nothing but smooth with a heavy, creamy smoke.
One of my favorites at the moment is not that expensive. 25 for $45. Rated 93 by CI. Its a Nestor Reserve Maduro. Very, very tasty. I could smoke this every night.
Just ordered some 5 Vegas Series A. And some ****** Tabac Super Furente. Ill let you know on them.
Theres a few to look at.
HeHeHe. Forgot, they are Native American Tabac on this board. LOL
If I had to pick, the Nestor and CT Exodus 1959 would be my choice at this point. Not quite full bodied, but good smoke. I like that heavy maduro flavor.
The CAO Soprano is very, very good as well, but $265 a box, Im not smoking many.

Middleton's Black & Mild; a flavorful full body smoke at a very reasonable price.

Also, for everyday, runnin around cigars, I have been keeping a box of LaFinca Fuma Cortas and Coronas around. At the suggestion of Tim and Harter. They are good and I dont feel too bad about tossing one if I have to at the half way point.....
But a good, deep dark maduro in the evening is hard to beat, IMO.
Posted by DAA (Member # 11) on July 21, 2006, 08:56 PM:
Yup, those CAO's are NICE. Have had a few (bummed off a friend). I had a couple mazos of the "Native American" Tabac's, too, not bad at all -- especially for the price. I favor a full bodied smoke too. Bought a mazo of Ghurka's recently, one of their milder blends. Nothing wrong with 'em, but nothing too exciting about them either.
Have never tried the Nestors, Toranos or Middletons though. Will have to look into them!

I just snubbed out a Nestor a few minutes ago. At two bucks a stick, they kick ass. Better than alot of the higher end ones I have smoked. They are square pressed. I like em, but some dont like that for some reason.
I have been tempted to buy a few of the Ghurka Double Maduro. They sound awesome. Actually, CI ***** a Maduro sampler that includes them and several others, I may get it next time.

I have several that I enjoy. I limit myself to one a day, and I have a collection of about 1000 to 1200 at any one time. I prefer ISOM's but they are getting harder to come by. Those that can be bought locally, well, here is my list:
Ashton Aged Maduro line
Arturo Fuente Don Carlos line
Punch Robusto
H. Upmann Robusto
Padron 2000's
Tony Bahia Gold Maduro
Opus X Line
LGC's
I usually go with a Padron or an Ashton on a daily basis.

Canine, about this smoking thing;
A person smokes cigarettes & cheap cigars.
A person enjoys a good pipe.
But a good cigar is something that a person experiences!!!
Posted by Andy L (Member # 642) on July 21, 2006, 10:08 PM:
Amen. I got enough pressure on me from work on a daily basis. Nothing I like better than going out on my deck, or outside the motel when Im working on the road, and sitting in the quiet and smoking a good creamy maduro.
Its a relaxing experience.
Posted by canine (Member # 687) on July 21, 2006, 10:09 PM:
Well, i could use some more experiences. Which brand should be best to experience first?
My kids are on my ass about cigarettes. Maybe it's time to quit them and have the occasional cigar.

My advice, start with something that you can afford once or twice a week. Also, start with something mild. As your develop your tastes, you will go towards Maduro or a ISOM. Once you have those, you will be spoiled.

Go to www.jrcigar.com and look at the LaFinca in the Fuma Corta size. I think they are about $19 for 25. Good smokes for the money and not real heavy either.
While your there, check out some of the JR Alternatives in something like the Macanudo or Don Diego. About the same price listed above and mild as well.

Canine, after a few more years of marrage, you will find that a good cigar can bring almost as much pleasure as sex.
Plus, they are less expensive, and a damn site easier to get.
Posted by DAA (Member # 11) on July 22, 2006, 06:32 AM:
Canine, I'd have to say that yes, for me at least, cigar smoking is something that kinda did come with age.
And for me at least, I really did not/could not properly enjoy a cigar until after I quit smoking cigarettes. Smoked the cigs for 20 years. During that time I did smoke an occasional cigar, but never thought there was anything special about them. Finally had enough of the cigs and quit. When my daughter was born a couple of years later, a friend gave me a nice cigar. Holy Crap was that thing GOOD! The difference between smoking cigars before, compared to a couple years off the cigarrettes, was that I had regained my ability to TASTE. Not just food (and good whiskey), but CIGARS.
Anyway... I'm just rambling, but my point is that you might not get too much out of a nice cigar while still smoking cigarettes. I sure never did. Had to let my taste buds grow back first!
Oh, one more thing - for a starter cigar, I don't think a guy could go wrong with a Padron. They are reasonably priced and a very nice smoke.

Nothing real special, starting to develop a taste for the Don Diego babies(33 band) and the Elites(38 band). I like the mid 30's to low 40's for band width, mainly because they smoke reasonably quick withot getting too hot. I only want two or three good fingers of Old Grand Dad (bonded 100), not the whole damn bottle.

One that I've like for several years now is the Corona Club Tubulaires. They are a small ( 4.75X40 ) but they sure pack a lot of stress relief in that little tubo.
The only downside is that you can't order them from a store inside of the US.
Posted by DAA (Member # 11) on July 22, 2006, 11:00 AM:
Yeah, the little ones are right handy Dennis. Seems harder to find a good "small" cigar though? I have not tried either of the ones you mention, or the one Tim likes. Will add them to my list of things to try. I bought some of these petite corona 2nds awhile back and really liked them. Especially for the price.

You guys and your cigars,
I'm a chewer, not a smoker, but I have a couple funny cigar stories. Brad Norman and his brother were up hunting a couple years ago, and Brads brother had to give me a cigar. I told him repeatedly that I didn't smoke but he insisted that I have one. So I just kind of wooled it around and chewed it. Come to find out that it cost more than I spend on chew in a month. I did almost the exact same thing with some Mexican clientel. But they were quite a bit more insulted when I chewed their cigar. The same Mexicans brought some "good" tequila. And it was good, until I looked at the $500 price tag on the bottle. Then I decided it was way too good for me. I was scared I would spill some.

You guys might want to try this on a hot day;
Fill a 2 gal. jug about half full of ice.
Pour in a gal. of ice tea.
Add a fifth of Peach Schnapps.
Stir & Enjoy.
Not much 'kick' to it, but it's a tasty yard work drink.

Posted by Tim Behle (Member # 209) on August 15, 2006, 05:48 PM:
Dave,
Looks like I could use some more of your expert advise.
I'm thinking that with this campout coming up, that it sure would be nice to have a couple of EXTRA special cigars for one night.
I know that Leonard is fond of the Partagas, and I have been looking at some of them from the original Cuban fields. I kind of like the El Ray Del Mundo's and have looked at a few of them.
But if it were up to you, what do you think would be the best cigar to enjoy while sitting around a campfire, and swapping stories with some of the greatest guys in the World?
Posted by DAA (Member # 11) on August 15, 2006, 07:50 PM:
Damn, Tim, that's a really hard question to answer. I'm far from any kind of expert on the subject, and there are still a ton of really great cigars I have not smoked yet.
But since you put me on the spot...
Two cigars I have personally smoked that I remember as being especially great, are the Graycliff Espresso (the Graycliff Originals were awesome too), or the La Aurora Ruby.
But Damn! There have been plenty of other really, really nice smokes! I've had some Padron's that practically made the world move. And some of those El Rey Del Mundo's are super, super good. Never had a bad Partagas either, for that matter.
Ya know, the real best answer, might be "whatever the BEST cigars I happened to have at the time are"!

Tim,
I had been thinking along the same lines.... If you want, maybe we can compare notes and bring a box of a couple different kinds.
Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 2nds, 5 Vegas Series A and Nestor are some damn fine cigars that dont cost an arm and a leg. $2-4 each.
I was planning on bringing several anyway. But, if you want, maybe each could buy a box of good ones as well as what I was bringing and pass em around. Sounds good to me.

That's kind of what I was thinking Andy.
I was looking at getting a small box of really nice cigars to share with a few guys who really enjoy a good cigar.
I just need to decide on which one's to order so I can get them into the humidor for at least a month before we get together.

I personally think one of lifes great pleasures is an arturo fuente or a romeo and juliet, with a couple fingers of 15 yr glenfiddich. On a recent trip down to the big easy I stopped in a shop across the street from landry's that made their own, and made a damn good one at that. I bought a 52 from them for around 9 bucks that had excellent flavor, i wish i was in there during working hours, you can pick out every thing and watch them make it for you.

Every once in a great while, I get a cigar that wants to only burn a small section in the center. It won't stay lit, and I constantly have to relight it. I've tried clipping the burned section off, sometimes that works but not always.

Andy,
You've got me hooked on those 5 Vegas. I just ordered a box for myself.
I tried another Gurkha last night, and while they are good, they just don't live up to their hype. I think it offended a few pussies at the next table too. They came in and sat down just as we finished dinner. I heard one woman make a remark about the smell of burning hair, then a few minutes later a "man" at the table said he couldn't take the smoke and they got up and left.
I felt like pointing out to the loser that he had chosen to sit in the smoking section of a Bar and if he didn't like smoke, he could always sit in the larger Non-Smoking section, or run 30 miles down the road to McDonald's where they don't allow smoking at all.
