Sometimes I wake up too early, and things get stuck in my head.

I've a question about Leonard's friend Lochi from South Africa.

Say that Lochi moved to LA, and in a few years, became a US citizen.

Would he from that point on have to classify himself as an African American? ( He would hold duel citizenships )

And if he wasn't considered an African American, why would someone who's never even been to Africa considered one?

I think to be an American, you had to renounce any other citizenship you hold?

Anyway, I love the way your brain works. Mine too. I can remember my parents laughing hyterically at me as a little child because I asked, "If white people have white teeth, then why don't Black people have black teeth?" See I get hung up on wierd thoughts too. [Smile]

Before anyone gets their ftuit of the looms in a bunch...I am not prejustice!!! (White painters have a tendancy to irritate me though [Eek!] )

Lochi is Afrikans, they came from Holland a couple hundred years ago and pretty much civilized South Africa, and which the indigenous black population is systematically destroying. I would bet that he considers himself just as "African" as any native black man? There is a problem with identity, for many people. Particularly ******** but they always consider me as "Polonco" because of my last name.....never considering that I'm half German and a quarter French.

Actually, I "think" that the English and some others can retain dual citizenship, as a naturalized U.S. citizen, but it doesn't work in the reverse, for we native born. If we apply for citizenship in any other contry, we (in effect) renounce our American citizenship. Doesn't seem fair, but that's the way it works (as I understand it) Like, a Scotish citizen (for instance) can become an American and never lose his British citizenship or his various pensions and entitlements.

Of course, it doesn't work that way for others (babies) born in America to foreign Nationals, they retain dual citizenship for life.....I think?

Good hunting. LB

You are correct Tim. He would be an African-American, and if you think about it, even more so, than blacks who have resided here for generations. They have never lived in Africa, onbly their relatives three generations back, whereas Lochi, was born African, and then moved to US and gained citizenship.
Just like you and I are indeed, "Native Americans" [Smile]
