Early this Winter [non-snowfly]. Myself & another hunter[Rooster], were out looking for coyotes. West of town. We spotted for awhile, & continuing Westbound.
We were 2 miles NorWest of State Center, Iowa. Then he say's, "Hey, there's one". I quickly panned to me NorWest.
Out around 150yrds, was running. One of the weirdest looking coyotes, I've ever seen. It was kicked out, of a grassy fenceline by a farm tractor. The coyote paused for around 5-seconds, looking back @ the tractor.
Coyote had very long hair[perhaps 5" long or so]. It looked like a [Long Haired Collie] & coyote cross[by looks & color]. It's lower half was all white. With the top half divided in quarter's[rump was Gray & it's shoulder's/back & head, were Golden]. Looked to be pushing 40lbs or so.
I quickly grabbed my bino's, got a good look. Then he ran over a hill, we lost him.
Yesterday out spottin & callin. I came across 2 farmer's, that were Bro's. Same general area. We visited awhile on the roadway. I told them about that coyote, we'd seen early Winter.
They said another coyote hunter, 7 miles North of [where we seen this one]. Seen him up close. He, thought it was the same, as what we thought.

I recently looked at a bunch of pics of wolf mix dogs and one of the mixes was collie-wolf. It looked in the pics much like you described, only the wolf-collie was around 100lbs. Maybe it was a wild collie-coyote or maybe it was a wolf-minuature collie mix that someone bred for a pet and escaped? Hard to say, but it would definitely make you take a double take when seeing it!

Well, I saw one like that, sorta. Partner killed it. Looked just like a collie in coloration, but it looked 100% coyote in every other respect, and it was less than average size, maybe 25 pounds? Had that long coat and she was a fawn color with white areas and black highlights. Prettiest coyote I ever saw.

Leonard,
This one I spoke of. It's head/muzzle looked "all" coyote to me. The length of it's fur & the color patch's were what was remarkable, about it.

Sounds pathetic, but it tortures me. Not knowing what these odd canines, really are.
The first time, I ever heard the word "coydog" Was from my Dad.
A few yrs later. I tagged along with him, up to Aldin, Iowa. To look @ a coyote trailhound on a farm. Farmer had a 75lb one[coydog or coywolf...whatever ![[Confused]](confused.gif) ] skinned out in his fur garage. It was dark Cherry Red[like a Red Fox], from muzzle to the tip of his tail. His daugther killed it, with her 12ga.
I've read from many folks[Biologist's & others], of the "odds" of one being born & surviving. It's first yr. But reading their opinions, has just further frustrated myself. As to what they "really" are .
This last one, is I believe the 7th, perhaps 8th "odd" one I've seen, since 1964. When I started hunting with Dad.
