This is the first snare of any kind I have ever set. This is a live catch snare. There was a good reson the instructions said don't set near a fence. Tried to get him out alive, but he ate my stick. Got video of that wreck. Me on one crutch in the mud, him pissed off.
Giving a vine hell.
OK experts. How old is he.

Wow, Ronnie, that didn't take long at all. I check the teeth on every coyote that I can, in every state that I call them. Those anterior incisors are different than any coyotes that I have seen. The developemental lobes on the mandibibular incisors should be gone before the maxillary incisors lose theirs. This one doesn't appear to have even had them. The second lateral incisors are very well developed and the canines are extremely long for their cross section. I see why east Texas coyotes (canis latrans frustror) are reputed to have red wolf (canis rufus) blood. I certainly wouldn't be surprised. Do a search on the red wolf. Looks just like your bad boy only in the 50-80 pound range. How much did he weigh?

You could be right, Higgins. He does look like the reds I have seen.

Why would you live trap them and then shoot it?

Rich. He was caught 200 yards from the end of my driveway. This is one out of bugger red. I will weigh him latter today. Bugger red has a good ten to fifteen pounds over this one.
You never did say how old you think he is. Wait till you see the video. He put up a hell of a fight I am kinda glad I wasn't able to turn him loose. Don't really know how that would have turned out. He came around the stick several times trying to get at me. You are going to love his vocalizations. I think he called me a MF several times, he also talked about my Mother.

Ronnie, he doesn't have the primary indicators that I use, so I just don't know. A best WAG would be 2-4 years old.

Looks like he could use braces. Actually, I don't know dink about aging them like Higgins, but even I see the anomalies in those anterior incisors. Looks like somebody used the ral teeth for an open mouth mount and got them all put into the wrong places.

Im confused?, any snare Ive seen, catches them with a choke hold around the neck. I don't see the snare wire, except in the first pic....where it looks to be around his chest, just behind the shoulder.....is that right????

Cool pics, Ronnie.
Biggest coyote, I ever killed. Had a chewed off snare, over his chest & one leg. He knawed through the anchor end of the snare. He weighed 50lbs.

I caught a couple across the chest with one front leg thru before. Sure as hell doesn't choke 'em to death that way, but they're really pissed when you get there. I'm surprised at how much fur that things has for that far south. Nice looking coyote. I figure he's thinking, "Holy crap! I survived two hurricanes so I could go out like this?!? "

Looks like you made your loop a little too big. But it's still a hell of a nice coyote! Be careful catching them around fences that you don't want torn down. It's amazing how much damage a snared coyote can do to a fence.
Now you need to go and snare another one, just be careful that you don't become addicted!

Looks like the coyote got both front feet through the loop and cable ended up around his chest. Loop was probably a bit too large like Tim stated. I love those long canine teeth. Makes him look a lot like uncle Jay.

Tim & Rich. This was the first snare I had ever set. I was way to stingy when I cut the support wire. It is supposed to be a 12" circle 10 to 12" of the ground. It wound up a 8" circle 4" off the ground. Since it was close to the fence crossing I figured I would catch a Coon.
The only thing I can figure was when he crawled under the fence he thought the low loop was part of the fence, and just kept crawling.
Lance There was some things that happened right after the storm that got amnesty granted to bugger red. I tried to post some of the storm effects, but no one was interested. There was some truly strange things that went on with the animals, but someone had camoed there truck and it seemed far moor important to the board members so I had Leonard delete the storm post. Rich, Jay, and Sheri know what I am saying about what the pack did. I used life catch snares so I could turn any member of this pack loose. I screwed that up. I intend to put a Cow ear tag in Bugger Red if I catch him.
I will pay round trip expences, and provide food and lodging to anyone who can call in Bugger Red and get him on tape( He won't be shot). Plus a bonus of $250.00 if you can do it. If you cant you pay me the $250.00 and I will still pay you're expences. [ January 31, 2006, 11:57 AM: Message edited by: varmit hunter ]

varmit hunter, To catch a coyote in very first snare you ever set is pretty dang good, no matter how you slice it. Am I looking at the photo correctly? If that snare is actually around the coyote's chest, right behind front legs, he must have tried real hard to do that.

Cool pictures. Snares were never legal where I trapped. Always wanted to try it.
When I see you guys messing with these live coyotes I'm reminded of the old 7mm Mauser that I have which has a scar about 3/4" long one the end of the barrel where a coyote chomped down on it. It looks like someone took a scratch awl to it. If they can do that to barrel steel (even 1896 vintage) just imagine what they could do to human flesh....

JoeF, You may wont to check out www.snareshop.com. These live catch snares are legal in many states that don't allow snares. They have snares that are even legal in New Jersey.

Ronnie, Come about May 15th if I could get a dog or two of mine down there, I'll bet you and I could call him in if you have any idea where he and his are living at the time. All call wiseness goes out the window if you can get one of my dogs within a quarter mile or so of his den and family. The older and meaner they are, the better they work for my methods.

Call, They have been dinning in the same place for over twenty years. They are in a 370 acre rice fields with only about three acres of dense woods.
I may have to sell a few guns to get you down here, But it would be worth it to see you and the Dogs work. I have about eight places in the County that are all the same. Large pasture small woods. I can fill you up with Cajun cooking and craw dads should still be in season.
I promise, no Hurricanes.

Here's a Wyoming snared coyote, the snare was in the cow trail to the left of the coyote.

4 for the day

And my part time trapping partner with a couple more cats I snared from yesterday.

Windshields are a pretty common item for me. I'm wondering if that one will outlast the tape! LOL!
If the gravel roads don't get them, they get pitted from the damn wind and sand blowing, and then they are awful hard to see through if you are driving into the sun.
