And to all the Longhorn fans. I'm diehard K-State, a Wildcatter to the core, and we had a miserable season with MUCH hope for what next season offers, but since we couldn't be there, I'll stand by our Big 12 brethren and say, "Saaaaalute!"

That was a great game. USC played hard and well. Kept me on the edge of my recliner all night long, just like a championship game should be!

Best of both worlds, Jack. I was never any good at team sports, but I love the atmosphere of a good college dust up. Usually involving my 'Cats, but in a pinch, I'll pull for any team in our conference. Exceptin' for University of Kansas. No true K-Stater could ever stomach the thought of standing behind the Hawks. I'm wretching right now as I type this just thinking about it.

Sure they do, Barndog. Somebody had to make those T-shirts and ballcaps they wore after the game. [Razz]

Not that I feel the need to validate my interests, but I will. My 14 year old son is a rabid FB fan and a true student of the game. Sadly, he sports the blue and orange of the Florida Gators rather than the purple and silver of K-State, but he'll outgrow that someday. The time we spend when I'm able to sit around and watch a game with him is true quality time between us. I learn a great deal from even his limited experience, and it's obviously important to him that I show an interest in what is important to him. We argue between plays over what the offense and defense should pull on the next route, and then give each other hell when we're wrong. I can't get him to do anything else so I'm happy to see him motivated to be part of something, even if it doesn't involve killin' stuff. [Big Grin]

My wife is a big ISU fan (big 12) so there was alot of cheering for Texas last night. When it came down to the 4th and 2 around mid field, USC had the ball, I told her that if USC kicks the ball it's over, I didn't think Texas would have been able to move the entire length of the field in 2 minutes against USC's defense and still have time to put it in for a touchdown. But, I said if USC tries to win with their offence, force the 4th and 2, Texas's defense will stop them, get the ball at midfield, and march it down for a touchdown in the 2 minutes.

After the commercial break, USC didn't believe their defense would hold or something, decided to do it with their offence, and Texas stopped them, got the ball at mid field, marched it down and scored, not leaving USC much time to get into field goal range when they got the ball back.

And the timeout by USC before the 2 point coversion, duh... why would they kick it for 1 point? 1 point would have given Texas a 2 point lead, a field goal by USC would give them the win. Of course Texas is going for 2 since that would give them a 3 point lead and put it into overtime if USC got into field goal range. If his staff was on the ball they would have known Texas was going for 2 points and put the defense for it out on the field and not had to burn a timeout. If they had had that timeout for that last USC drive, maybe, just maybe, USC might have changed their approach (thrown once down the middle) and gotten down into field goal range, kicked it, put it into overtime.

In my mind the last 2 minutes the USC coaching staff made 2 errors, going for it on 4th and 2 at midfield with 2 minutes left, and then not anticipating Texas going for 2 after the touchdown to go up by 3 and having to burn a timeout (their last?) that could have made the difference in their last drive.

I didn't much care for USC's q-back comment on the game when we was walking off the field, something like "they [texas] had some good plays at the end, but we're still the better team.". [Roll Eyes] While that may be true, show a little grace and sportsman ship and a little less ego...

All in all one of the best football games I've seen in a very long time.

later,
scruffy

scruffy, good commentary. On the defense side of USC's last two minutes, they were suckered. Vince Young spread them out on several consecutive plays. They only had four in the box and I told my son that we'd see Young go up the middle or at least make a break for it with no one to stop him on the ground. It was bad enough that they let him do that for the TD, but to make the exact same mistake and escort him into the endzone for the 2 point conversion was salt in the wound. All in all, a helluva game and a great watch. Good reason to stay up late.

I'm really looking forward to next season. KSU has an all new coaching staff. New head coach. New offensive coordinator from the Packers, and a new defensive coordinator from the Buccaneers.
Our "season" starts with the spring game on April 22 and I plan on being there to see what kind of show they have put together. Gonna be fun.

Yea, and the touchdown earlier by Texas that should have been reviewed because the runner's knee was down was just another example of the poor officiating they have for the bowls.

Since you son is a gator fan did he watch the Iowa/Florida game?

The overseeing body (whoever that is...) of the officials is reviewing 5 plays in that game, I believe all 5 calls went against Iowa. Like the onside kick Iowa recovered at the end of the game, Iowa was called for off sides when they weren't and it gave Florida the ball on the rekick. The overseeing body came out and said that was a bad call and that it should have been Iowa ball at the end.

I don't know what the other 4 calls are, maybe the play where the Iowa guy was face masked, bad, and then the offical called a 15 yard penalty on the IOWA player for facemasking. Eh??? [Confused] Or the call on the helmet to helmet hit on the Florida QB, the replay showed the Iowa players helmet didn't touch the qb's helmet. And what was there 2 times when Florida had 12 men on the field and that wasn't called. [Roll Eyes]

The espn commentators were catching it through, the one guy (don't remember his name) was going nuts over the bad calls, getting pretty excited. The replay booth guys had to be hearing and seeing it then so why didn't they stop and review???

Someone told me the bowl games are officiated by the USA league, officials that can't cut it in the big 12, sec, etc because of the pace, but they use them in the bowls because they are impartial??? I wonder if that is true.

Most of the games I watched the officiating was bad on both sides of the ball. On the Iowa game it seemed to mostly be against Iowa. You can say it's because I'm biased, but I can honestly say I was doing something else while the game was playing in the background. When the commentators started ripping on something I took notice. If the commentators hadn't been picking up on it I wouldn't have been watching the replays of it. I just wasn't paying attention (cutting new reeds for some of my calls [Wink] )

scruffy

I'm sorry to say that SC choked, they didn't deserve to win, they didn't play like world beaters, especially the defense.

Maybe it was just a bad day, but all those missed arm tackles, it was hard to watch. If Carrol was solely responsible for the defense, I don't know if he deserves his job, anymore?

I thought they had it, in the 3rd quarter, but they made some real bad plays, after that. There is no excuse for letting that quarterback romp all over the field. I'm feeling pretty let down.

Good hunting. LB

Leonard,

Thanks for not bringing last year's Orange Bowl up. That one still gets to me. I thought that game would be as good as the one last night. Little did I know.

I couldn't decide who to root for last night. Texas who I can't stand and we play every year or USC who totally destroyed us last year. I was just hoping for a good game and that's what we got.

Do you think USC could have reached OU's 47 game winning streak if they would have won that game last night?

Hard to say, Brad. I think they have become too dependent on that offense. I think, based on the three or four games I watched them play this season, that they got as far as they were going to get, against top tier talent.

Good hunting. LB

Being a Big twelve fan (Baylor) I was hoping Texas would win and was scared they would choke at the last minute. You California guys can be down all you want about USC's play, but against any other team in the nation but Texas that night, they would have won.

That was a game for the highlight reels for years to come. If you know the story behind Vince Young you couldn't be anything but happy for him. In my opinion he deserved to win that one. That is not to take away from Matt. Look at USC's record and I stand in awe of Matt and the whole team. This simply was a clash between two great teams that would have crowned winner, whoever scored closest to when time ran out. If there had been another minute to play USC likely would have been the winner. The two teams were that good.

Thanks for the positive words Lance. It sure brought out the sour pusses. [Razz]

[Razz] back at you, Gerald. If you're a diehard Baylor football fan, then I'm in awe. That takes more guts than being a KU football fan. (Just kidding.)

We have had our good years...it is getting hard to remember that far back though. We have had our share of great players and games. I will lay claim to Mike Singletary(Chicago Bears), Walter Abercrombie(Pittsburg Steelers), Luke Prestridge(Punter for the Broncos), Mike Lee (Miami Dolphins), Micheal Johnson (did something in Track and field?), Jeremy Warnier (Followed in Micheals footsteps), Mike Czymski (catcher for our College World Series team in the late 70's, he manages a plant right down the street from mine and is on my deer lease)as fellow Baylor Bears.

I was at the Baylor\USC (mid 80's ?) game when Rodney Peete and teammates scored a last minute touchdown to avoid an embarressing loss to the underdog Bears. It was a great victory for us though...at the time.

I was at the Baylor\Texas A&M game in 80? when Walter Abercrombie almost singlehandedly beat the Aggies with a record 219 yard rushing game as a Freshman.

I was at the Baylor\Texas Longhorn game where Coach Grant Teaff fired up his team by telling them that if they would go out and win the game, he would keep the worm warm and then put a big Night Crawler in his mouth. The score Baylor 16, Texas 9.

Yes Lance, we have our memories...they are just not coming often enough. There is always hope for next year. [Wink]
