Author Topic: Rabies R.Shaw Peanut Butter Man, da da da da DAH! Member # 73 posted August 28, 2005 08:38 PM                   Following an act of stupidity, I now have the privledge of taking rabies vaccination shots for the next four weeks.The shots started today,next is Monday and Wednesday.Then each Sunday for the next four weeks. Monday is the big day with 14 cc's of rabies immglobulin evenly distributed between both arms,both butt cheeks, and site of the bite. 14 horse killer cc's. I believed the threat of infection was much greater than the threat of rabies and told that to the attending ER doc. He did not share my opinion and neither did 3 other doctors I spoke with. What is wrong with those people? Don't they have any respect for a high school education? LOL Anyway, I guess it is better to be safe than sorry. Several years ago I survived tularemia and it carries a 7% mortality rate,so I can get through the inconvenience of this too. Dude, that is right up there with rattlesnake bite or being attacked by a werewolf. Well maybe not, but it will be a real icebreaker at a party. I'm with Lonny. What's the story? I'm curious about the pain level with the new treatment regimen. Keep us up to date, Randy. I might be worried about someone else, but you're tough as nails and whatever bit you probably needs treatment for Shawbite. Member # 73 posted August 29, 2005 04:56 AM                   Yesterday afternoon I received a call from a friend who is a realtor. She was having an open house at one of the homes she has listed and there was a bat flying around in an upstairs bedroom. Would I remove it? Sure. When I arrived I asked if she wanted the bat dead or alive. She said alive. I opened the bedroom door and there was some man with a blanket trying to net the bat. Mostly he was using the blanket for protection as the bat circled and swooped around the room. He retreated to the corner and on the bat's second pass, I knocked it to the carpet with my hat. Reached down and before I could get a good grip, the bat latched on to my finger. This time of year my hands are calloused and I did not think his teeth would penetrate. The little sob would not let go until I was outside and gave him a little toss.I looked down to see two puncture wounds, each with a drop of blood. Around here, bats are known carriers of the rabies virus and without CSI Hillbilly to recover the bat, I was screwed. There is no doubt in my mind that the bat was not rabid, but whats a fellow to do? Thats no good man! Hope you get threw all this! I would hate to send you howler to someone else....LOL I had a guy I work with call me a few years ago, with the same thing, bat it the house. He had tryed all night to get it. He had the dry wall beat all to pieces trying to kill it with a broom, a big stick and a net....lol There were all kinds of holes in the wall! He busted his window in the room and broke all kinds of things. When I got there, I took one swing at it and it hit it with my hat and it went right in the fan!!!Man was that a mess! I think that the Doctors were right to err on the side of caution, since if I'm not mistaken, rabies have a 100 percent mortality rate. Doctors used some exotic treatment of antibiotics, or something? As close to 100% fatal as you can get. Bats and coons and fox are the most common vectors. Why take a chance? Good hunting. Not all of these symptoms may occur in every cases of human rabies. Incubation period - Usually 20-90 days, but may be as short as nine days; very rarely as long as several years. There are no symptoms during this period. Prodromal Phase - 2 to 10 days fever anorexia (poor appetite), nausea, vomiting headache malaise, lethargy pain or paresthesia (numbness or tingling) at site of the bite Acute Neurological Phase - 2 to 7 days hyperactivity disorientation hallucinations seizures, neck stiffness hydrophobia or aerophobia (intense fear of water or air caused by pain from tightening of muscles in the throat) paralysis or weakness Coma - 0-14 days Death, or extremely rarely, recovery >Gives you something to think about after being bit by a bat or any other rabie carring animals. The annual family vacation had a little excitement the first time we had the noctornal visitors. We expended quite a bit of energy trying to catch, capture and or nutralize our guest. Fish nets and toilet plungers were weapons of choice with very little success. By accident I discovered that by simply proping open the door or the windows that don't have the screen nailed shut, that they would fly out on their own. Huh, self eradicating. Over the years our tolerance has grown considerably. Last year after returning from night fishing, my son and I sat accross the table from each other eating a piece of pie and having a glass of milk before turning in. It's 1 am sitting in a dimly lit 100 year old log cabin, bat pops through the logs at spot where some of the chinking is missing and is doing laps around the room 2 feet above our heads.
