I just finished this coyote mount for Heather Ward, Brayn's better half. This is just the coyote and not the finished end product completelwith panel and all the fixin's. I'll let Bryan post a pic of the whole nine yards once it's hanging in their living room.

Time to start working on deer heads now.

WOW, Lance that is a very live looking criiter. I'm trying to figure out the pelt though. How will it be mounted? That face is really great!

I have to agree with Danny. That is a great presentation. I have seen a lot of coyote mounts and that is as lifelike as any I have ever seen....judging by a photo, of course.
Good job, Lance.

That's as nice a coyote mount as I've seen too.
Lance, if you don't mind me asking, how much would a simple head mount cost me? I don't have room for a full body, but do have a spanking new reloading room where I could put a head mount. Thinking I might have to do that.

I think so too. Coyotes faces, especially their eyes are so expressive that you can actually read their emotional state. I've seen alot of coyote mounts and the expression is blank. Well done Lance. You are an artist.

Nicely done!!
On behalf of others who are thinking the same thing that I am, could we see a couple of more views from different angles?

Excellent mount Lance. I agree with the others, very well done.
I second the motion. Can we see a few more pics of this mount, and maybe a few pics of other coyotes you've done?

It's not so much the eye itself, as it is the detail of the upper and lower eyelid. It doesn't look dried or artificial at all. And note the ears. They look fresh and clean, right down to the veins. Excellent attention to detail!

Here are a couple looks at the finished mount from different angles.
left:
right:
A look at the backside to show how I used a shed to make this pedestal form into a wall mount:
and to dredge up (again) my other display coyote that many of you have seen:

Randy Black (RanUtah) has asked me to do one just like this.
Getting the eyes right is really very simple, and it never ceases to amaze me how hard it seems to be for most people. As far as the ears go, I really didn't do anything outstanding on them since I don't go whole hog on commercial work unless the customer wants to pay a little extra. Most of what you see there is just layering the right colors in the airbrush.
Thanks for the compliments. I hope to compete with a coyote in the next few years since few of the ones I see in competition look "right" to me.

Lance,
I just thought that I would let you know. If I happen to get an especially nice dog coyote this season, I will probably send it your way. I think the natural "alert" look is the only way to go, with a coyote, and I think you have captured it.
Good hunting. LB
edit: except, I would want the ears dirty. lol [ June 13, 2005, 11:03 PM: Message edited by: Leonard ]

Well it arrived a week ago, I’m slow to post. I knew Lace was quick on his turn around but still didn’t expect to have him gracing our wall so soon. I must say that pictures don’t do it justice. Thanks again for your hard work Lance.

LOOKS BETTER than the picture? Wow, hard to believe! Might have to go kill a nice coyote this year?
Good hunting. LB
PS say Bryan, you might have a photo of that coyote with your wife. We'd like to see it, to compare, ya know?

Bryan's picture of it actually looks much nicer than mine.
To put the mount in its proper context, here's a picture of Heather in the field with her first coyote...

I love that picture becvause of the grin on her face. A fella needs that kinda thing once in a while to help us remember how exciting it was the first time we drew blood in this game.
And, finally, here's the finished mount on the Ward's living room wall...

In truth, the turnaround on this mount was longer than I liked. My tannery was kinda slow in going this year and this particular coyote was just too important for me to tan it in house. Then again, one of my selling points is and has always been turnaround time, since I consider it to be one of the three main draws of a good taxidermist, the other two being price and quailty/ accuracy.
Thanks for the kind words and, moreso, for the opportunity to do this coyote. I've got another one from Randy Black that I haven't gotten word from the tannery on yet. I'm looking forward to doing it as well. As for now, my neck allows me enough time to do one deer mount before I get to hurting too much so it will be about another ten weeks of this before I get all caught up.
Ronnie, what I've got is but a vcery small fraction of what you've endured, and I remind myself of your problems when it really gets to aching. You must be made of boot leather or something.
