Topic: Jamned gun blows up

I got a phone call from West Va. that a 14 year old boy was killed,trying to unjam his rifle,'This happened a few days ago'.From what i was told, the boy called a cousin and explained that his gun was jamned,and his cousin told him to put the gun away untill he got there,'the boy didn't wait'.
,They found the boy dead,with a hole through his chest,a peice from the gun had enterd the heart,from the gun blowing up..The police were investigating the case..The sad part of all this is,the boys mother was already grieving a recent death in the family.I don't have any other details ,but can only guess what caused the gun to blow up.

Hate to hear things like this. Very very sad tragedy that may have easily been avoided. This is a perfect demonstration of why gun and hunter safety classes are so important. You've got to pray for his parents and family
I wonder if the kid had either of the two.

Sad story, but you know, it wasn't until I was on the Sheriff's Department range that we really even discussed the idea of a squib round. Without information about if he was using factory loads, handloads, was the barrel plugged by dirt or did the last round lodge in the rifling because of a bad load. Wo knows. But, my son has been fully informed of how to handle such a situation and to get someone involved that is more familiar with guns than he anytime he enocounters any unusual problems with a gun. Then again, my son hunts only with me and shoots only with me, so if he encounters a problem, I'm usually right there. Then again, there's always the chance. So, just in case, it's good for him to know.
