What's your longest distance coyote kill?
Mine isn't too long. I nailed one in the chest at 200 yards (third shot) as he was running perpindicular to me. Each shot I took caused him to do a 180, shooting gallery-style.
Tough shot but took three tries.
Let's hear about yours?

Tripp, I never had a long shot at a coyote,so i'm left out of this group...Now if you was talking whistle pig(Aword another has used on another board,a"Farly,"long distance.

I'm still trying to break 900 yards on a coyote. Here is a link to a thread on this board about a coyote I shot last year at 727 yards.
I need to get the big gun back out and practice some more. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

I wish I could remember, but I do remember the longest shot I ever seen. I was with my old hunting partner that shot one so faw away I couldn't even see it. I ask him where he aimed, he said about 10' in front of it and 15' over the top. The damn coyote had a bullet hole right through it's heart, he was using a 243 at the time. This is not a joke, it really happend. Good Hunting

In fact when I walked out to get it, by the time I got there, weren't nothing left but the skeleton.

Spotted 3-coyotes lying in a row. In a North to South manner. Wind out of the North around 10mph. Stalked in on the most Southern two. The closest was 200yrds or so, the second one close to 275yrds, the third around 400 yrds, all were balled-up.
I was prone on top of my hill. I was useing my M1-Carbine shooting 110gr FMJ. Both of these closest dogs, were lying high, on top of their hills. Thought I'd try for the middle one first.
Bang! miss, these two go flat-out. The Third sees 'em running NorthEast. He takes off North.
Seconds later, I see only one yote loping N.Easter, down in a very big & wide valley. He's 5-blocks out from me, closing in on the 1/2 mile fenceline & T-intersection fence.
I aim high by 10' or so & 6' lead. He slows down to go through a barbed fence. Bang! a second later, smacked him in the back right leg. As he's going through the fence. He goes on through. Then comes back through to my side. Bullit echo, push's him straight back to me.
He's coming strong, around 200yrds out. He breaks Southbound. I'm leading him. Bang! shot him through both hips, he spins, sits right down.
He just gets up on his feet. Bang! broadside rd through the lungs.
He goes down. He gets back up. He's now walking slowly. He gets another 30ft or so. Bang! Cervical Carotid hit, DRT.

Did i ever tell you about the one i killed with the Daisy air gun?...Longest shot i made was with a 22.250. I killed a woodchuck at 608 yards.Gun was a Remington 700 BDL topped with a 6x18 power redfield scope.Bipods and sand bag for rest. Believe this or not,i shot the chuck with another mans gun,he got mad and never hunted with me since."I never made another shot like that since either."

I met an old guy up in the northern part of the state that said he held the world record at the time, with a 50 caliber custom made rifle..He also said there was an article on him in one of the reloading books,and told me the record he set was at 1000 yards.I did see 2 custom 50 caliber rifles he had with him..I don't recall this gents name...With Tim making the 727 yard shot with a smaller caliber,i would say that should hold some kind of record...If anyone else killed one that far,i sure don't know about it.

Leonard,
.30cal M-1 Carbine. Shot a few dogs with it. Then traded it in on a better gun. At the time, the only rds. I could find for it around my area, were FMJ, not good.

A couple of winters ago, a Nor-Wester wind around 10mph. Hunted most of the day, nothin. Then finally spotted 2-yotes laying out, on the farthest West 1/4 mile fenceline.
I had to walk, diagnally into the section. 4" of crunchy snow on the ground. I creeped up to the 1/2 mile fenceline.
Went prone, I then saw 4-coyotes on the next 1/4 mile fenceline. Two were laying, two were walking back & forth. To the ones laying. They were all awake, looking around.
I waited until, one mover lined up to one laying, he paused. Then squeezed off a rd from my Bushmaster. Hit the front dog, in the lower front leg. He's spinning & bucking. Then bolts
right towards me, running pretty hard, on uneven picked corn field.
Bang!, right over his head. He flenched, still coming. Bang! right under his chest. 170yrds out, Bang! mid-Sternum lengthwise. He rolls twice DRT.

The mention of the M1 brings up a funny story about a sheep herder I know that works for one of the ranches I den for.
This old herders name is Ed and he is about as full of BS as an individual can be. Rolls his own smokes, wears an eyepatch, and smells bad. Anyway, I was at his camp one day, and he asks me "So, how far away will you shoot at a coyote?" I said, "Oh, I don't know, I've shot a ways a time or two if I had to." At which point he shows me his old Garand rifle and says "this here is what you need, I can shoot at a coyote at up to a mile."
I looked it over politely and said " sorry Ed, but it's not my goal to shoot AT a coyote."
Same guy, later that summer, I stopped at his camp to see if he had been hearing any coyotes and I noticed that a large tree about 50 yards from his wagon had been damn near shot in two. And I mean a pretty dang big tree. So I ask if he'd been target practicing. "Nope," he said, "see that dog right there, that dog is a bear dog" (looked like a border collie to me) "when that dog barks in the night, I know theres a bear in the sheep, so I jump up and dump a clip full into that tree. I haven't had a bear kill all summer." Of course this is in the very end of the Bighorn mountains and bear kills aren't all that common anyway. I asked the rancher about it later and he said that the herder was about to break him in buying 06 shells. Every time he showed up his herder was out of shells again.

Have a Remington 700 .22-250 bull-barrel that gets excited every time it hears the word whistle-pig.
Boy do I know whistle-pigs. Got 'em around Mountain Home Idaho thick.
Wish it was Spring. Wish I was there.

I don't know why he hates hearing that so much. If he'd spend a little more time on the range, he wouldn't need all of those damned dogs to track down everything he shoots.
I'd swear, he thinks the heart and lungs are located just behind the rib cage.

And there is no finer coyote killer than the 17Rem, but having a dog to trail them after you shoot them really helps finding them.

What they say is "a seventeen" (any seventeen) is the finest "fur" cartridge.....
