February was the PVCI competition handgun hunt. I used a TC 6MM JDJ. Tyler and Robb used TC 223s. I use a rifle scope, hold the grip in my right hand, lay the barrel in the crook of my left arm, left hand grips right wrist. Rock steady and the left hand absorbs the recoil. Problem is it only works on the left side 180 degrees.
My turn to call, barrel is resting on shooting sticks, grip is solid in my lap. Both hands on the call. Tyler and Robb are 50 yards to my right covering that 180. End of first series a coyote comes out of the wash in front of Tyler and Robb, trots toward me. They have their cross hairs on it but can tell from the coyote that it is committed to me so they let it go even though it is only 30-40 yards in front of them. I see it coming , lift grip of TC while lipsqueaking it in, stop it about 15 yards out, lean into scope, thinking only of coyote and crosshairs. Crosshairs are sloid in the middle of chest, touch trigger, get punched in face. I knew immediately what had happened but my nose has been broken several times and is kinda numb anyway. I put my glasses back on and hit the ki-yis and then did a couple more series. I thought sweat was dripping off my nose until I looked down and saw the stain on my shirt. I collected the coyote, walked over to Tyler, Robb and Ron, our "judge" for the hunt. At least Ron tried not to giggle. Tyler and Robb didn't even bother. Robb said something like "Dude, I need to get a pic of that." and with one hand he stuck a digital camera two inches from my face and punched the button.

I've never done anything as dumb as that! ( At least not with a handgun)
But just before I sent the action off to be rebuilt into my 1K gun. I decided to take it calling one morning. That action started life as a .338 win mag. I had shot it a couple of times off of the bench here at the house, but like you when calling in the coyote, I forgot a couple of minor things.
Namely, I forgot to hold it firmly to my shoulder. Instead, I had it just touched into position much like I shoot my 17 Remington. I stopped the coyote broadside at 70 yards and touched the trigger. The scope hit me square in the eyebrow and literally ripped me backwards off of my stool.
John-Henry wasn't any better at hiding his laughter than Tyler and Robb were for you. We only made the one stand, I didn't trust myself not to do it again.

Moral of story.....If you had been using a "real" handgun, that never would have happened. You basically had in your hands, a rifle with the butt stock sawed off, along with 10 inches of barrel. The purist I know you are Rich...you should be ashamed, tisk,tisk. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I gotta add an "AMEN" to what Vic said! Also, I agree, that's hardly a real handgun. No wonder you guys need a chaperone.

I had only ever shot revolvers. The first time I shot a "real" handgun (1911), I rested the grip of the gun in my left palm. The base of my right thumb was pointing up and my thumb nail was pointing forward. My right index finger pulled the trigger and my right thumb nail went flying!!! Holy Smokes that hurt!?!?
edit info.: my nail really didn't go flying but it did pop a wheelie and took a real cool 90 degree angle leaving a bloody mess of my grouchy thumb. It fell off the next day.

Hey Rich, If it makes you feel an y better, this story about a local guy was in the newspaper this morning. They don't think liquor was involved. Then again, some ppl are so stupiod, you don't need liquor...
From today's Salina Journal:
"A man using a pellet rifle to shoot at a .22-caliber shell ended up with bullet fragments in his groin early Sunday.
Michael Lewis, 27, Delphos, was reported to be in fair condition Monday morning at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, where he was taken after being treated at Salina Regional Health Center.
Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said deputies still are investigating the accidental shooting, and they hope to speak again with Lewis.
“At the time, he was uncooperative,” Kochanowski said.
Kochanowski said a deputy was sent to Salina Regional to meet with Lewis after he was taken to the hospital by an uncle. He said Lewis told the deputy that he was alone outside his mother’s house at 2745 N. Hedville about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, using a pellet rifle to shoot at the shell on a picnic table.
Kochanowski said Lewis told the deputy that a pellet from the rifle hit the shell, causing it to explode. The bullet hit Lewis in the groin.
Kochanowski said the bullet apparently lodged near major nerves and arteries, which is why Lewis was sent to Kansas City.
Kochanowski said there was no indication in the deputy’s report that Lewis had been drinking alcohol prior to the accidental shooting."

I gotta tell ya. That picture gets uglier, every time I see it. Rich is about the most beat up person I have ever met, so (at least) he's used to it. I know the other twin isn't in to pain?

All I know is Rich and I were talking on the phone the night before the "Incident". His Wife interrupted our conversation several times. He finally said "Ronnie I have to get off this phone, And straiten Debbie out about interrupting me so often". I really and truly do believe the damage was dun with a rifstol (Think about it) though.

No, wouldn't be Tyler. He's at the point where he takes it easy on the old man. Respectful about age, etc.
Out of genuine concern, I have to ask: Rich, is that a deep enough cut where you should have had it stitched up?
He's into self-medication; told me about injecting his rear with a horse syringe, once. Needed a little help, as I recall? It would have been amusing to watch him suture his own nose.
Just kidding, Rich. Hope it didn't make your face swell up like when you were licking the venom off your camera lens with your finger moistened with spit?

Leonard, actually the pic is out of focus and it wasn't as bad as it looks. No sutures. Just laid the flap back where it was supposed to be and it healed up nicely. Only left a little mark which added a little character to my nose which is quite handsome and distinguished now.
Tyler certainly doesn't take it easy on me either. One of his major goals is to beat the crap out of me (as he so eloquently puts it) and he works out 45 minutes every day and spars with his buddies in the evenings. I spar with him twice a week and his speed and timing are improving. Just a matter of time now.
