Just returned from the Kaycee fur sale and beer drinking contest. I did well at the fur sale with my cat average topping the market there. I must have held my own in the BSing and beer drinking as well according to my headache this morning.

Cal, What kind of average and high did you pull on your 'cats? I stepped in one two of our state auctions and saw that our highest 'cat went for $195 at the February sale. A lot, and I mean a LOT, of KS trappers tooled up heavy this year in expectation of big number prices and boy did it bite them in the butt. Saw a lot of good looking fur being "no saled" as they opted to ship it north on their own.

Cdog, As I'm sure you know there are alot of differences in cats. We have some good ones. This sale is a private deal with just a few trappers that all put up good fur. They have several buyers come in and place sealed bids for each lot. There were about 200 cats, 80 to 100 red fox, and several hundred coyotes, and various badger, coon etc.. The very best cats brought well over $500 but the lesser cats were graded hard and brought alot less. I averaged $325 for all. I had some bring over $500 and some bring $150. Another big lot brought an average of $289, one lot brought a $304 average and two big lots averaged $320. We have what they call a Lynx/cat, and they are way different than the Kansas Nebraska Oklahoma type bobcat. Coyotes averaged $22 Fox averaged the same. Keep in mind this was very well put up fur.

Cal, as you say, some people don't know what a lynx-cat is. Some actually scoff at the term, but not the fur buyers.
It has pissed me off to no end that Nevada closed cat hunting to nonresidents. We used to get some extra nice lynx-cats out of the northern part of the state.
You did good on that sale; congratulations!
BTW, how many were called, versus trapped? Guestimates are okay.
Good hunting. LB

There were very few shot critters there Leonard. I'm sure that 99.9% were trapped. I had a few called coyotes and no called cats. Although I did have one shot cat. (Target of opportunity).

Doesn't bother us one bit. Kinda wish they would start charging nonresidents for coyotes too.

I personally haven't been to O'Gorman, but would like to go someday. I do work with and around several others that have been to O'Gorman and have read alot of his literature so I have had alot of his info. He is a good trapper, no doubt.

CS, Not to be a jerk but what would happen to NV's economy if it wasn't for the people from CA visiting the casinos? Anyway, hunting is a sport that has to be fought for all over the U.S. All sportsman should stick together for the future of hunting for everyone.

Yeah, like Steve says, California should charge out-of-staters an extra $200 to get in to Disneyland, Sea World and Universal Studios. Maybe $100 per day to swim in "our" ocean.
You should see the Freeway to Las Vegas every weekend. A lot of California money gets dumped into Nevada. And, we subsidize all your roads with OUR Federal fuel taxes. And, we subsidize your educational system with OUR Federal income taxes;etc. Eplurbus Unim, I think they call it?
Good hunting. LB

A little behind the times aren't you Leonard? The CA ****** casinos have captured most of the CA gamblers. It was devestating to Reno for a while but now Reno is doing like Elko and flying in gamblers from the East coast. The Elko casinos have always relied on East coast and Idaho gamblers.
The main effect people fleeing CA taxes has had is to make property taxes go up 40% or better a year in the border areas of Lake Tahoe, Reno, Carson City, Fernley, etc.
Californians leaving CA have pretty much ruined Colorado and may ruin Nevada.

Yeah, I'm behind the times, a bit. And, it appears obvious that you have not seen the stretch of Freeway, with the 90MPH speed limit, of which I speak.
To tell you the truth, I would rather the money go to Nevada than the local tribes. Yeah, they get some of our walking around money, but not like the Vegas hotels on the weekends. Reno has been marginal, for years.
Good hunting. LB
