What is a good book to get for learning how to skin coyotes etc? I've always just whacked the tails off.

I would recommend Blaine Eddy's video.
Hunting and Skinning for Profit
It's very detailed in every aspect in skinning.

I haven't seen that one, but it is highly recommended.
Point being, books are okay, but for really getting an idea of what is involved, the DVD video is the way to go. There is one that John Henry raves about, called: The Two Minute Coyote. Involves using a come-along and a golf ball, something like that?
Whatever you do, if you want to save your fur, be sure to case skin .
And, you can watch someone do it one time and you are an expert, except it takes you four times as long.
Good hunting. LB

Shoot Leonard, I know a fellow who can hear a story told and become an expert just from that ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Well, thanks for the immediate response. I'm curious about the golf balls ?! I hate to read anyhow. DVD will work. Thanx.

Wasn't there something in T&PC last month about a skinning rig?
As far as books, the phone book works okay. Use it to find the game warden's number. Call him and ask for the name of a good fur trapper, then use it to look that guy's number up and call him. I've had several guys in the taxidermy shop learning how to cape deer and don't mind a bit teaching others how to skin. Especially if I can get them to do some OJT and skin out some of my stuff while I get caught up on other work. Nothing beats hands-on experience.

both video's highlighted are very well put together... there are some additional ones advertised in the Trapping focused magazines...
Gutpile, the golfball is a means of attaching the comealong to the fur. Seeing it done gives you some insight....
While there are times where I wish I had a comealong to help pull the fur, it is not necessary... Find a furbuyer and ask to watch them skin a few coyotes... you may want to also ask the buyer if they prefer them skinned or whole... I know several buyers that paid as much for a whole animal brought in as they did for pelts that were skinned, fleshed and stretched...
Once you get if figured out... it will take between 5 and 10 minutes for a coyote... assuming you don't have a big gaping hole to have to work around... that may slow you down a bit when skinning and requires a bunch of time sewing....
Good luck in your endeavors...

I'd also recomend Blaine Eddy's video. My kids watched the video twice and then picked up their knives and started skinning. That's my oldest girl skinning a racoon in the picture. [ December 22, 2004, 10:50 AM: Message edited by: Doug ]

I can’t speak for the other video mentioned but Blain’s takes you all the way through the process. From the time the animal is down to having the pelt ready for auction. The DVD allows you to skip to where you are in the process and repeat as necessary.

Cas,
1.) The edges of Golf courses are great places to make stands at first light.
2.) Name one other sport where on a hot summer day a bikini clad girl will drive up on a little cart and bring beer to the players?

Tim, do they really do that? I've called around golf courses for years even well into the day and have never seen bikini beer maids. Dang, why am I wasting my time with you guys? Most of you don't wear bikinis.

Rich, you have to bear in mind that Tim has his own private golf course down in there in McNeal. The last I remember, Miss Joyce had one of those bumper stickers that suggested her other car was a golf cart.... now we know the rest of the story.... ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Doug, that picture just blows me away. What, she's 10-12 years old? Wish mine wasn't quite so "girlie", she would never skin anything. You're a fortunate man. Loren

Geeze Doug, that tail looks like it was stripped by a master. I'd better get that video. Hat's off to your younguns!
I'm a slow Missouri hillbilly and have mostly skinned trapped coyotes. A tractor front end (immobile), a tree(immobile), a come-along, and a rock (never sophisticated enough to have golf balls readily available)were pretty much the ticket.
If you skin them warm you can forego most of the above, especially the comealomg...

LOL all this talk about golf balls. The whole while I'm thinking to myself..."I could've sworn he used an old door knob". LOL
A cased pelt is easier, but a coyote opened up nice and wide with the feet and toes intact will also make a very super cool pelt. I've got them laying across all of our couch arm rests that way. Very cool indeed. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)
