Mommy is in San Diego with my 8 year old. So I took the 2, 4, and 6 year olds pheasant hunting today. I saw where someone had long ago torn down a barbed wire fence and it was all bundled into a tightly wound giant ball. On top was an impaled, frozen, and decapitated ermine (white phase weasel. It looked like maybe a raptor of some sort killed and took it to the wire ball for lunch, dicovered it didn't taste like rabbit and then split. My second guess was that it was the victim of one bad-assified Loggerhead Shrike!?!?
Any other theories?

A lot of places I frequent, a bundle of barbed wire is used to drag roads, same as old tires.
Then they check every so often, for the sneaker tracks.
The ermine? Who knows?

Some type of bird of prey seems to fit the depiction... an owl would be a good fit...
Momma probably went to San Diego to make sure the pattern was broken...

The little guy climbed up there to look for some lunch when some coyote hunter decided to see if his scope was still true. I know I would have.

That is kinda what happened, one night up in your area, barndog.
We were somewhere south of Carlin when we were making a stand and caught a set of eyes way out there. The weird thing was it appeared to be standing on the hood of an old abandoned car. Real bright eyes, way out there.
I was on the light and my buddy was eyeballing it. I asked him what it was and he said he didn't know, but he was going to find out. (not really, we never are iresponsible taking a shot at something unknown)
But, anyway, he could see it well enough to know it wasn't someone's dog or cat. So, just for curiosity, he took his litter head off with the big gun.
And, that's what it was. A (mostly) white ermine. Looked like a damned hood ornament.

The shrike thing was another failed attempt of Dummy Danny's at internet humor I guess. LOL ![[Wink]](wink.gif) But you gotta admit, it would truly have to be a pretty bad-assified one if it could!!!!

Just because a weasel can take out a critter 5 times its own size doesn't mean I'd think a little sparrowish sized bird could. lol

Sorry to drag up an old dead topic...I just got around to skinning the weasel. I found a bunch of little round holes in the pelt and few pieces of lead. The mystery is no more. Some knuckle-head checked out his kill then hung it on a wire ball to show off. LOL
