I have spent many years researching tail spin.
After much observation. I noticed most all tail spins are clockwise. This is due to the energy imparted by the right hand twist from the rifle barrel.
My big break through came when I shot a Coyote with my Colt 1911 45 ACP. The barrels left hand twist induced a counter clock wise tail rotation.
Now this is hard ass scientific data. Better known as Texas B.S.

Plenty good enough for me, Ronnie. EP, that's another story. Don't forget the rotation of the earth, and the moon phase, like they don't matter?
Good hunting. LB

Don't forget the influence exerted by lattitude. If you're south of the equator a counter-clockwise rotation is induced. But is that overcome or counter-balanced by barrel twist? ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

That reminds me of the bang flop on the right side or left side theorys.
Speaking of tail spins; I once head shot a feral tom cat, that went into such a violent and rapid tailspin(counter-clockwise) that he actually elevated himself and hovered at about four feet before crashing back to earth! O ya, almost forgot about the one that drilled himself(clockwise) two feet underground. Nothing but that last few inches of tail exposed above ground!
Beat that one, Ronnie!
To be honest with you, I think the barrel on my 22-250 is about shot out. Just doesn't seem to give the bullet enough spin to wind them up as tight as it used to do.

Every coyote I shoot does a couple of back flips. Does this mean that the bullet is tumbling?
Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on August 16, 2004, 11:54 AM:
Yeah, good questions! Ya know, I get a lot of the flop on the back with four stiff feet in the air and a hallelujah shudder. (w/grimmace) The first time I saw the hole he dug with the tailspin, I thought it was squirrels!
Good hunting. LB
BTW, do they flop forward or backward, and how does that affect the spin?

Dang Dennis I can't top you're story. I almost did, But there was interference.
The Coyote was headed straight away. I shot him at the base of the skull. His tail got to turning so fast. It acted like a air boat propeller. Lifted him about two feet off the ground. He made it about 45 yards before hitting a barb wire fence. Talk about a mess. Took me a hour to fix that fence.

Ronnie,
This happened several years ago.
It was an extemely hot August day. I think with the temperature hovering around 110F. I believe it was a record high for that date.
Anyhow, at about noon, I sirened up a large dog coyote and put him down at about 50 yards. Immediately after which, the coyote started to tail spin, and I swear within seconds I had the bitch and the whole litter of 9 pups standing right behind the dog, cooling off in the breeze.
Did I mention that it was really hot?
Btw: I currently looking for a tail spinning coyote decoy. I think it's going to be extremely effective on those hot summer days. Do you know of anyone that would have something like that in stock? Maybe a tail spinning female coyote decoy? Should be great for calling in the old dominate dogs.
Off Topic: Drove down to San Antonio the first week of August. Couldn't believe how green things were down there. Must be getting lot's of rain.
