Hello Norm.
I drew a deer tag for 30A. Only thing and unit I put in for this year.
My Permit number is....#000001
Should have put in for Sheep or Buffalo or Elk or someting more substantial than deer.

Yup.. 97 Ford Ranger. But then, it seems I get drawn for 97 Ford Ranger tags ever couple of years.

Congrats Jay. Should be able to score on a deer there... assuming you don't scare them all away shooting at jackrabbits and coyotes!!
Trust you are healing and ready to get back on the video trail

I put in for everything except buffalo, and drew only a permit for our little"Cows" deer. The archery elk gods did not shine on me this year, and Im a little dissapointed......maybe next year? Bruce and I have a tentative plan to chase a lion or two horseback this fall, so that will settle my big game hunting nerves:)I can put some trail miles on the young gelding Im working with, and maybe watch ole Bucksnort nail a long tail. Hope some of you others drew a few of Arizonas coveted tags. Tim......how did you fare?

Good job Jay! Are you going to hunt up by Dos Cabezas or down here closer to my house? I see a real monster mule deer just across the road in 30B from time to time, but I don't think I've ever seen him on this side. I'll keep looking for you.
I got a Whitetail tag for unit 29,
I put in for one of the six antelope tags given here, plus the four more up by Wilcox, but didn't get drawn on any of them.
Edit: I drew for the 4 day hunt over Halloween, when did you get your tag Vic?

I'm sort of like JH, hate the lottery format. (yes, I was over there reading the whines)
But, why don't you guys put in together? I don't like to hunt alone, enjoy the company.
Is there (by chance) a policy change, as in Nevada, to quit sticking it to the nonres. on allocation of tags?
Good hunting. LB

Can you purchase any tags over the counter for deer, antelope, or elk in AZ? From what you guys are saying it appears you have to get drawn to hunt just about anything, even when using a muzzleloader or bow? Is that the case?

A guy can buy a few tags over the counter still. Fall bear is over the counter, lion also, fall turkey(archery) is too, along with archery deer tag.

Thanks AZ. I was just curious because it seemed like all you Arizona guys were planning your big game hunts on how the draw went.
Hey good luck on the Coues deer. Interesting critters from what I've read in the outdoor rags. What does an average buck weigh? Do they inhabit the same terrain as your mule deer?

Tim, I have the 3-day Muley hunt and will be hunting a private ranch SW of Dos Cabezas. Have been watching 3 bucks for several months now and know their routine pretty well. Half tempted to use my 480 Ruger but haven't been deer hunting for several years, so I might chicken out at the last minute.

Lonny:
Ive won a big deer contest with a great little Coues buck from the Huachuca Mts. that went 92 pounds field dressed, but thats on the heavy side for these little deer. A good average, for a field dressed mature buck would be in the 70-80 pound range. Ive seen them as light as 45 pounds dressed, and as heavy as 102.
As for their range, they usually inhabit the higher elevations, about where the mulies stop, so it's not uncommon to see both species in the same unit or area. Ive also seen pockets of Coues way down in the bottom of the San Pedro river valley, right down in the creosote brush and cottonwood trees by the river. Generally, you will find them in the transition zones from mesquite and occotillo to oak, manzanita and pinion pine areas. Great little deer to pursue, I havent hunted mulies for 20 years, our little whitetail are so much more fun to hunt, and inhabit much prettier terrain to boot:)

AZ, Thanks for the description of the Coues deer and their habitat. A field dressed Coues buck is little bigger than I would have guessed, sounds about the same weight wise as a younger whitetail doe here.
I'm with on hunting whitetails. We have mule deer and whitetail both here and I haven't shot a mule deer in more than 15 years.

Heck boys,
I didnt get drawn for anything....because I didnt put in for anything.
This year I am going to focus on waterfowl and predator calling. Of course I will have a bear and Mt. Lion tag (maybe even res tags too) for those species. Maybe Ill even get a reservation Javelina tag, time will tell.
