Hi guys, my name is Jim and I am brand new to predator hunting. Oh boy, another hobby.

I have been into duck hunting and dog training for a while and just now decided to get back into deer hunting. Since I have really liked the laminated stocks and found a CZ 527 in .223 with a Desert Sunsent Camo laminate stock I had to buy it. It is even legal for deer here in Alabma. But I got to thinking that it would be great for Coyote and groundhogs. I decided to check the web and found this site.

I have put a CZ 452 Varmint in .22lr on layaway as well. I did want to ask about how effective the 17 hmr is on coyote and groundhogs. The ammo is quite a bit more expensive and if I use the .223 for varmints then I can use the .22LR for squirrels and such.

Thanks

Jim B.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, Jim B. Glad to have you on board.

I have zero experience with that 17 rimfire, but I wouldn't push it too far, as an educated guess?

There is one guy I heard of that is using it on coyotes, under certain conditions. DAA knows him pretty well, maybe he has an opinion?

Good hunting. LB

Welcome; I think the postman has some experience on the 17hmr;

Many don't feel it is the right round for coyotes except in specific situations...

Good luck;

It is a great round for coyotes, once you get them in a trap and shoot them in the ear. No better than a 22LR, but just as effecive.

Actually, Jack, I find them to be a quite effective coyote round in a single shot. Shoot them with the .17 to stun them, then run 'em down and beat them to death with the butt stock of the rifle. [Smile]

Jim, welcome to the Huntmasters Board.

Hello Jim. I can't recomend the 17 HMR for Coyotes either. This bunch of Pigs had not read about the 17 HMR. They just died. -

Welcome to the board..............

Ole Varmit Hunter don't ya hate it when a plan comes together............ Jim B as you can see a 17 HMR in the right hands can do many things....... you can not put a scaple in a butchers hand and expect him to remove one of your kidneys.........

Then on the other side of the coin..... I know folks that deer hunt with a .300 Win Mag fer dem little 125lb whitetail.........

Good luck and enjoy the outdoors and remember take a child shooting........

So, now that you are thouroughly confused...... You might wait until you have some experience before attempting to hunt coyotes with the 17Hornady. I can't recommend it, for most applications.

*personal to Varmit Hunter. Got your package today. Thank you, Ronnie. Appreciate it very much!

Good hunting. LB
