Jerry, you mentioned that you called in eleven coyotes while taping a pilot for an outdoor channel. I would love to hear about that. How about sharing the story.

Sorry rich , Have not been here for a while , Its been a busy spring with work and the new place . Bruce Clemmans and i tooK a couple of guys out on a three day hunt , They were filming a pilot for the outdoor channel . The first day we went up north to some of my very best ground . On the first set we had just sat down when this old dog coyote came walking into the set from the rear. ( i had not even begun to call yet)The coyote was between me and the guy i was guiding( Scott) so i couldnt take a shot , this guy just watched the coyote walk away . After the set i asked him why he didnt shoot the coyote and he said ( because the camera wasnt rolling yet !!!!!) well Jerry welcome to hollywood . I explained to him that if any coyote is in range regardless of the camera situation he was to shoot and kill it . I also explained that is the reason i was allowed on these ranches , and if the rancher knew a coyote had gotten a free pass i would be booted right out of there . Called in three or four other coyotes during the day ( windy and warm) and got busted by all of them at 300 yrds or better . The camera man wasnt real slick at not moving to fast OR the wind was busting us,Or having four guys Two rookies on the stand wasnt helping much. dont know for sure . Finally at straight up noon , we walked into one of my favorite and most productive spots . 30 minutes of hunting barks and yips on the howler and the prarie dog distress playing very low on the fox pro a female came in.The guy i was guiding (Scott) did an excellent job of barking the coyote to a stop and took a real nice chest shot at 200 yrds . We called till almost dark and came home. The next morning we were all tired as the day before was long ( didnt get home till almost 10:00 P.M. ) and got up at 4:30 A.M. so we called right here by the house on a school section , It turned out to be a great plan , the first stand I had three coyotes come into the stand , ( busted by wind again, or whatever ) . we went to stand two , I told the shooter ( Scott) and the camera man to watch the fence line , The camera man didnt point the camera where i told him to and low and behold we had four coyotes coming in to the hunting barks and the Prarie dog dist .They winded us at 300 to 400 yrds out, and that was that . we moved less the 1/4 mile and i decided to call against the wind . same calls , two minuts into the stand MR. Coyote was charging hard into the set . Everyone was on the same page this time , and all was recorded on film like the one the day before . Scott shot the coyote standing still looking right at him in his Shaggy at 26 yrds . Then he jumped up and started whooping yee hawww . I explained he should have sat quiet as it was so early into the stand we may have brought more coyotes in . we decide to go back to my house and film Bruce skinning the coyote, We did and after that we watched the footage they had taken , They said they had enough for a 30 min segment so they decided to drive back home . Bruce and i took the rest of the day off , and went calling the next morning . Now you are not going to believe this . we went to a new ranch i just got , and we called a couple of stands with no takers . we decided to walk a ways from the truck , and as i was cresting a small rise i saw whiley leaving like a bat out of hell . I thought what the heck lets call it anyways . as i set the caller out and was returning to my seat i noticed a coyote out in the crp looking at me . Bruce later told me there were two . I sat down and got on the ap-6 this coyote came charging right at us !!!!! (no pressure on this ranch i guess) Bruce had not had time to put his shaggy on and was sitting there with no camo , no face mask etc . The coyote came into 200 yrds and slammed to a stop . I hate to tell you this but this one got away . I was waiting for Bruce to shoot and he was waiting for me . ( this wont happen again) LOL. well the day was wearing on so we went to one more spot where the coyotes had headed. It was getting hot so we didnt walk to far . 38 minutes into the stand nothing was showing , I raised my binocs , and started scanning the area below us. About 1/2 mile away i spotted a den in a sandy hillside , I thought , if i were a coyote and heard all this wonderfull yipping and distress noise where would i be , I stared scanning in a direct line toward us and low and behold MR. Coyote was standing there about 500 yrds out . I looked back at Bruce and gave him five fingers and with my hand down on the ground pointed in the direction of the coyote . I looked back with my binocks , and started lip squeaking , Here he came . slowly and not at all in a hurry . another 5 minutes went by and old whiley started going down wind . He stopped behind some sage brush , and i thought i better take him now , all i could see was his front shoulder . I was shooting my brand new tikka 595 in 22-250 , the first round out of the old girl hit whiley right behind the shoulder and he went down like a box of rocks . He was a real nice lil silver dog so Bruce decided to take him home skin him out and he is going to tan him for my 4 year old son Jared's bedroom . well that was it , I learned alot about how hard it is to hunt for a camera and all the necessary hollywood stuff that a guy has to do to make it all look right . Will i ever do it again ? probably not , But ya never know . Now Rich , If i had had that Higgins howler with me Im sure there would have been MORE fur to shoot with the camera LOL. Hope you enjoyed the story . Jerry .,
