I've been talking to Byron South occasionally and in comparing notes we both are about the same age and did alot of the same stuff in our younger years. We were both PRCA memebers at about the same time and paths probably crossed a time or two. It seems like I know alot of cowboy types that have got into this predator hunting stuff. -
Byron, You might recognize that Texan in the shades just to the left of me. (Me being on the horse) and at the back of the chute I am coming out of. You guys all called him Hawkeye.

How many others had these bad habits a few years ago?

Don't you guys know you can get hurt fooling with horses?
A real nice couple I know had their oldest boy, 13, get hurt bad about a month ago. This is at least a 4th generation ranching family who have a beautiful ranch at the foot of the Ruby mountains. It is the best looking ranch I have seen in Nevada. Both the kid and the parents have been around horses all their lives so are not new or inexperienced with horses.
The boy was practicing steer roping on a mechanical steer. His mother was there on another horse to keep an eye on things. Something spooked a nearby horse, which spooked his horse then it all turned into a train wreck.
The kid ended up with 2 broken arms, 2 broken wrists, a broken collar bone, a collapsed lung, and lost 3 fingers. The mother ended up in a back brace for 2 weeks.

They had to fly him to a hospital in Salt Lake, where he stayed for 2 weeks and has been back since for another operation.

Those big, strong, dumb animals are dangerous.

Glad somebody knew who that cowboy was. I would have guessed Richard Petty; shows how much I know.

Good hunting. LB

Dad gum it Cal. Now I got to go dig out my old pictures. I've got a 4 year old son that I'm trying to hide my past from. There put up in the shop. I'll get some out later and post them. You'll recognize a few folks as well.

Monte(Hawkeye) Henson was one of the best bronc riders to ever straddle a horse. He alway's had a very flambouant attitude. Not arogant at all. Just a very colorfull personality. I saw him in Oklahoma City the last year they had the finals there. He had a full lenghth mink coat on, boots tucked in with spurs on(silver of coarse), and that trademark black hat with big eagle feather in it. No one said a word, he was cool. No one else could have pulled that off with out getting laughed at, exept maybe Larry Mayhann. I was maybe 16 or so and just a kid, but I thought "Thats one cool dude". Loved to watch him realy hoe it out of one, then dismount like it was just another day at the office.

I'll go get them pictures now.

Cal. I had several Horses, And I worked a lot of Cattle. Never did Rodeo.

A guy sold me a horse. It bucked just like the one you are riding in that picture. It only did it one time, Cause I only shot it one time.

I have had hell trying to post these pictures. I finally took some shots of them with my digital camera and went from there.

I wanted to post this first picture because I thought some of you might recognize the guy in the vest on the far right. Heres a hint. He has eight worlds champion buckles.
 -
I wanted to post these other two so you could see that sometimes I was on top of the bulls. Cal, you may also recognize some of the guys in these pictures as well.

Well Byron beat me to it. I was going to tell you guys not to worry about Cal getting hurt on those horses. He mostly rode critters with horns. Now maybe ya'll understand where he's coming from. Great pics Byron. Maybe we need to perform a psych test on you as well.

pre flack jacket, pre face mask, and no logos. Real men!

Takes some balls to get stomped on, by a two thousand pound critter.

Is it true what they say? That a bronc avoids stepping on you, but a bull does it on purpose?

Good hunting. LB

Byron, it appears that you made a good choice going from working to stay on top of those steers to keeping the camera focused on the predator coming to the call!!!

thanks for the pictures....

Leonard.

Pre-kids day's too [Big Grin] .

No, it's not true. I've seen some great bucking bulls that were very gental, and would avoid hitting you at all cost. Neal Gay used to have a bull called "Joe Cool". He was about as rank as they get while you were on him. Once he threw you (which was usualy the case) he would quit bucking, and you could walk up to him and take your rope off his back. He loved to buck but didn't have mean streak in him. I've also seen horses that would be glad to paw and stomp your brains out first chance they got.

Yea Norm. I'm trying like heck to talk my son into being a hunter instead of bull rider.

Good Hunting

Byron, I believe that if your children continue to grow up in the shadow of you and your wife, they will make great decisions for themselves. They maybe cowboys, cowgirls, dr's, lawyers, or even hunt and video...

Regardless, I know you will be damn proud of what ever they choose to do and that their choice will be based on the dream that you have helped them to create....

Hey Jack aren't you a pilot? Isn't flying a little dangerous. The best chopper pilot I know works for El-Aero out of Elko named TED.

Leonard, no coyotes in McGill, I've killed them all [Smile]

Flying is like most things. It can be either dangerous or safe depending on how you go about it.

I don't know if it is the same guy but last year El-Aero picked a guy with a broken leg out of the Ruby mountains after 2 air ambulance pilots said they could not do it.
