How many have seen a gray fox climb a tree?

They go up a tree as easily as a bobcat, maybe faster? Kinda hard to believe, unless you have seen it. They also like to lounge in the branches, draped across a fork, sleeping. In some places it is the only thing that saves them from the coyotes. They can also romp from boulder to boulder, way better than a coyote. Same thing with large lava flows, they can scoot across, and up and down the sides and do things that a coyote can't do. But, I'm sure a coyote can catch them, out in the open, without much trouble.
Yeah, they can climb trees, and I've seen it. I do not think any other fox can do it?

Red Foxes cannot, but Grays can and Do, Like leonard says, they have to to evade coyotes in areas where the coyote population is high enough.

Something else that climbs trees a lot is eastern groundhogs. In an area with a lot of dogs they become very proficient at it.

Those Groundhogs will swim too. I caught one in a 330 once that I had set for beaver with a dive stick over it.

Yesterday morning while calling two large hills that a R-R track passes between.I called a pair of coyotes.The 1st shot was easy the 2nd was lucky.About 100 yard away something was moving it was a gray fox about 15 feet high in a hackberry tree.The fox still lives.I must be mellowing in my old age.
Behind my house there are several persimmon trees.When they start to get ripe the gray foxes can be seen almost every day in the trees.

I have been water skiing and almost hit groundhogs in the middle of a 300 yard wide river. First time it happened I thought it might be a beaver, but when looking close it has always been a groundhog. I have never seen a beaver in a river, only in ponds and small streams.

I've got grey's that den under an old out building 30-40 yards from my house. It has a stone foundation and they've dug down under the back side. Their more like pets, I had a big cherry tree (till lightning hit it) that they would climb. they would lay on the big branches sunning them selfs. Not far from the out building just over the bank theres a woodchuck den (hes not as friendly as the fox) the trees have frost grapes growing all through them and he'll climb up in an ash tree and give out a whisle every now and then.
I have guy's come over and they'll see them, and ask why I don't shoot them. Theres know way I'll shoot them, their more fun to watch than pull their hides over stretchers. I did find one of the fox's dead early last spring behind the out building. We had a really snowy and cold winter and I'm thinking he just wasn't in shape to survive the cold towards the end of the winter.

Jack, you are right about groundhogs on both counts.One spring while fishing I watched something swimming close to the bank.It looked like a BIG muskrat until it got closer.

Here's one that shocked the heck out of me!
I've got this video of hounds treeing lions. These blueticks or redticks or whateverticks are up in pondera trees sometimes 30' feet in the air pestering these poor cats. Those cats run and jump up and down those trees with incredible grace and ease. The hounds however, ure unable to grasp the brances like the cats. They scramle to stay in the tree and fight at the same time. Many fall out of the trees. How those critters managed to get there in the first place, I'll never know.
They manage, but God sure didn't build them for it. That's for sure.
