Well, boys. It finally made it. It's, oh, 1335 hours or so right now, 6 degrees outside, with the wind, it "feels like" -8 (yeah it does) and the nice thing about Kansas... no matter how cold it is, you still gotta deal with the humidity - 65%. Winter has finally made it, just in time for all the coyotes that don't have mange to be rubbed out bad enough that they're not worth shooting. The worst part is that I'm working today, and tomorrow which is supposed to be colder yet, and can't get out to call until (maybe) Friday, if I'm lucky. Got on every piece of cold weather clothes I own today as I make my daily ten mile hike and doin' okay. Just hope the cold holds out until I can get some benefit from it Friday. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Whew! My ol' house would just snap, crackle and implode with temps like that. I've experienced -100 wind chills before, but what you've got is really cold.

My thermometer read minus 32 this morning. Raw wind. Not liking it much....
I'd kill for six degrees!

Just a number, ain't it?
Nah, anywhere around -35º or -40º is as cold as I ever want to be in. But, I know that most of the people that live in it throw a log on the fire, or don't do much more than run from the garage to the house when it's nippy.
I have had some rugged type midwest and easterners out night hunting, and they usually aren't prepared to endure bone chilling cold for twelve hours straight. It just saps you, by morning. Fatigue, lack of nourishment, they all want to curl up and sleep in a warm cab, by sunup. Man! It can be brutal, even at minus ten, what with that windchill factor.
Good hunting. LB

Beautiful day here, Tim. Thanks for asking! Shirt sleeve weather, mid-seventies.
I attended the GM Auto Expo thing today. Didn't have time for the Corvette, but I drove a Silverado, a Hemi Dodge, An Expedition, A Suburban, a GMC Yukon XL, a H2 Hummer and a Lexus RX470 (I think it's called?) Pluss several others I can't remember?....got the tee shirt to prove it, and a free lunch. Drove all the courses they had set up, the Hummer dirt hill was pretty impressive!
I found it to be an interesting day, but I still can't make up my mind; I liked them all!
But, I think I know what you are driving at, Mr Behle. You would be mistaken, if you think we don't know about cold weather, out here. Some of our mountain lakes have five feet of ice on them, up in the Sierra's. I never saw that in Minnesota, where I grew up.
Truckee Pass usually has 600" of snow pack, which is where Los Angeles gets some of it's drinking water, although it travels 400 miles to get here.
We get cold any time we want it....but, it's nice to get back to the palm trees. lol
Good hunting. LB

Leonard,
I meant in no way to run the noses of our Northern Brethren in the fact that we had good weather today. I had no intention of mentioning that I had to run the A/C while doing paperwork with the sun coming in on my side of the truck.
Yes, it's nice to know if we want cold and snow, it's just a short drive away. You know, I so much like seeing it up there on the mountaintops. I'm just glad it doesn't stick here in the valley. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Ah, shuck, guys. Just cause you got snow up to your keesters, doesn't mean it's COLD. I'm referring to a Kansas/ Nebraska/ Dakota badlands type of cold. My wife is from Montana. As our first winter approached, I asked her if she was ready for cold weather. Of course, she says yeah. She hates our kind of cold. My uncle was born and raised in the Colorado Rockies. He absolutely hates to be down here when the cold moves in. I've got a family on my route that moved here this summer from CO. Each morning, when I deliver their mail to their business, I find them, all huddled around a space heater asking me when the warmer weather comes back. Those high-elevation cold lovers all but die when our weather gets cold. I think it's because we're lower down and that much closer to hell freezing over. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

-10 here this morning with wind chills around -25. I might add that it's also overcast and the humidity is 70%. Makes for some awful squeaky snow. A coyote would probably hear your foot steps from over one half mile away.
In two weeks, the wife and I will be in sunny San Antonio, staying at our daughter's. One whole week of Texas cold. Can't wait!

Its been on the chilly side here though not usual for us. We've been between 50F & 60F below the last few days with highs getting to -35f maybe. Its 48 below now at noon as I type this. Gets a bit chillier when the wind blows at those temps too which it seems too each afternoon. Tends to cramp my hunting a bit.
I don't use the garage for my vehicles (it stores my hunting stuff! and its 12 below in it today)so it is always an adventure in the morning getting them started and warmed up and moving. Already blew a seal on my wife's car a few days ago due to the cold.

John,
I don't see how you guys stand that kind of cold up there. I've got several friends in Alaska, and one of the guys I work with relates stories to us about his days carrying mail there. It amazes me that your coyotes up there stay active, but I guess it's what they're used to. When the weather gets reaslly, really cold around here, even the coyotes hold up.
My pickup was built in Canada and it comes with all their regulars, like a nice block heater. Boy, am I glad for that.

The weather has changed here it is only about 8 below but with the wind chill it seems like about 38 below (humidity 92%) at least according to the weather network. It is acually storming here now with blowing snow etc. The have closed the trans canada hiway because of the weather.
Leonard you are right it can get pretty darn cold when night hunting, alot colder than I imagined. I have gone hunting in the day here when it's 30 below, and not dressed nearly as well as you have to be to go night hunting with you. At least when you are making day stands you have a chanch to warm up when moveing to a new stand.
I got hand it to you that night hunting is physically way more demanding than day stands. I don't think that I would of believed it if I hadn't been there. [ January 30, 2004, 08:18 PM: Message edited by: albert ]
