My best guesstimate is six or seven years old predicated on the fact that the developemental lobes of all six of the incisors are missing, the canines are well rounded and shortened, and the bicuspids-the meat cutters- are showing quite a bit of wear on the buccal cusps. What do you think and why?

My first guess was 7, but only because it's not quite as bad as my 10 year old dog.

Old dog that is for sure! Your not supposed to be able to call old veterans like that. Reminds me of the first dog I killed here in Arizona, but he had more wear than even this one. I have never called a dog that old again. I think he just wanted to die and et it over with.

Geez, Leonard. A cool photo of a coyote. A good subject to discuss and all you see is manicure? You finally caved didn't you? California has won. "Alas, poor Leonard. We know you not." Our Leonard will be missed. Perhaps someone can organize a wake.

I had to do a double-take, myself. I thought we said no girls allowed in the Club House? Okay, I forgot Crow Woman, but she's okay because she kills things; whereas, Nancy has never progressed past house flies.
But, where were we, anyway? Okay, I don't know much about aging coyotes, I seldom look in their mouths, just toss them in the back and move out. I would have showed my ignorance and guessed four years. Do you think it depends on where? I have seen numerous broken canines, and I have seen teeth worn at least as much as in the above pic, and my nails, specifically the cuticles, are usually in a little better shape.
PS why is it important to age these guys? I forget.
Good hunting. LB

The only thing that puzzles me about that picture is the whiteness of the teeth. Maybe its the sand that keeps them cleaner down there, but our coyotes teeth are real yellow when they show that much wear. I guess you guys teach your coyotes better dental care habits!

Im more struck with the condition of the teeth rather than the particular wear pattern. Don't those chompers look unusually healthy for a coyote that is being judged at 7? Last winter I killed an unusually large percentage of older male coyotes than I have in the past. Most all of them showed way more wear on their teeth than the one pictured. They not only had extreme wear to the incisors, but in several cases, they had none, only gum line, with the canines being little amber bumps at the gum. Cal made mention of this too,and I have seen just what he does, these coyotes generally have very yellowed and stained teeth along with the wear. Even with this wear and condition of teeth, I had always guessed these coyotes to be in the 7-8 range. They were in pretty fair condition, but had that old, rugged, last good year look, to them. So, if I have to throw a swag on the age....Im sticking with 4 ? Could be what it was eating, or gnawing on that has displayed the rapid wear of the teeth, but the general condition and health of his mouth makes me think he is not that old. We demand carbon dating Rich! [ January 26, 2004, 08:16 PM: Message edited by: Az-Hunter ]

You guys think I was kidding about the teeth grinding? They don't look just like plain ol' wear to me. It looks like those top incisors have been grinding away, back and forth and back and forth, against those lower ones.
But who am I anyway? I don't even know if a coyotes' jaws can move forward and back or side to side!?!?

Years ago, I worked in Pharmaceuticals, and we had a line of epoxy dental restoratives. They fed the goats and beagles specially formulated chow that was mixed with quartz sand , just to see which formulations were more durable and resisted wear.
It is possible that the rascal in question spent much time digging rodents from burrows, or something else that I can't imagine, but he may have routinely eaten (something) that was highly abrasive? That would account for the wear, and accout for the lack of tarter. And, it's also possible I'm full of it! But, at least Vic agrees with me.
Good hunting. LB

Well, Loco, I tell you what. Next year, when you, Q and I get together to hunt again, we'll call one up real close, You let it get hold of you - you pick the limb. Once he's got a good hold, I'll grab you and Q can grab the coyote. I bet we can move the two of you around enough to see how those jaws work. That is, if we can stand all the screaming and fussing going on. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

The lack of yellow on the teeth is strange.According to the chart the teeth begin to show dentine at age 4. If anyone would like a copy of the chart let me know and I'll mail you one.

You know, I was going to float that scenario too. Maybe the wear pattern indicates the coyotes propensity for pulling off the galvanized lids on the trash cans around Scottsdale? The whitening effect that is so dramatic, might be from chewing on the plethora of peroxide bottles from tinsel towns refuse? Whats the story Rich? We are curious now as to the details.

2-3 year old coyote that spent his last few days in an unchecked trap and wore his teeth done trying to chew the steel apart. On one hand, I'm giggling at the audacity of such a story, but I've seen a lot of tooth wear from a critter working over a foothold.

Vic, this is a coyote that Robb Krause took with a muzzle-loader last Sept. around Casa Grande. The scat in the area was full of orange, watermelon and mesquite. No peroxide bottles no whitener strips.

You all have great guesses but the truth is! That coyote hung around the suburbs and "was" experienced in drinking beer from a can!!!
