About 2 years ago I went to the Division of Wildlife library to do some research on bobcats. The last study was done in 1983 and the guesstimate regarding population was somewhere between 8,000 and 13,000 bobcats in the state; it wasn't even very accurate info. I found much more on mountain lions. And when I asked for coyote info. and studies I was quickly supplied with over 10 pounds of information. LOL The reason, I was told, is that bobcats are not an economic factor. Lions are to some degree (usually a problem lion). I guess coyotes are quite the economic factor! LOL

Danny, You've got that right. Until the fur boom of the late'70's/ early 80's, furbearers weren't even intentionally managed in most states. If you look at coyote literature today, you'll still find that a lot is ultimately directed at limiting their numbers as a way to reduce depredation losses. Aty the same time, little is being done to promote habitat for furbearers like bobcats, mink, or badgers. I wonder how many turds I could stir if I had a "Coyotes Unlimited" banquet and charged 45 bucks a plate plus access to the cash bar???

Dang, that number on bobcats seems really low? I'd guess we have 8,000 cats in Los Angeles County, and a lot more than 14,000 in San Bernardino County. Those figures can't be right?

Good hunting. LB

PS when you get to weighing all that BS on the coyote, it might be about 5 pounds, along with five pounds of truth.
