Hello everyone,
I have been lurking in the background for quite some time now and I really enjoy this site and have learned a lot. This is my favorite site on the web.
The purpose of this post is to find out any information I can about predator hunting in New Mexico. My wife, kids and I are leaving Southern California and moving to Rio Rancho (just north of Albuquerque) in April or May. Does anyone have any experience hunting in New Mexico? Any hints or tips on general areas? For that matter does anyone have any thoughts on the job market there? My background is in estimating/project management in construction. Any in-site would be appreciated?

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, DVD. Glad to have you on board.
Also, thank you for the kind words, always appreciate praise.
I just wish someone(?) would explain to me how, or why, a guy has nothing to say, but still enjoys reading the daily conversation?
Not puting you on the spot, but I've always wondered how to involve the lurkers. Judging by the hits we get, there are a lot of people reading this stuff, but not registering and therefore; not contributing. It's a missed opportunity for everybody concerned.
Good hunting. LB
edit: oops. the question. First of all, if you are like me, you will love northern New Mexico! I love all of it, from Gallop to Raton, and especially Taos and Santa Fe. You will not have a problem finding local coyotes, where you are going. I hope someone that lives there can provide you with more useful, current information. Good luck with your move, I'm jealous! Well, I must admit that with all the experience most of your members have it is a little intimidating. Besides, the answers to most, if not all of the questions I have, were already answered previously. Now that I have taken the plunge and registered I should participate more. I do have some questions about general areas to hunt so I guess I should start a new thread. You and some of the others could probably help on that. I promise I won’t ask about specific places to hunt. I also never considered that it is a missed opportunity for everybody. Maybe I do have something to contribute. I always enjoyed reading all the posts, even the ones from people who don’t have the answers but still participate. Also, I don’t feel like I will be banned from this forum if I have a differing opinion like it seems to happen regularly elsewhere (if you know who I mean).
I guess you like New Mexico as much as I do. I live in Anaheim so I’m not too far from were you live. You probably know like I do, that So Cal has a lot going for it but it is just getting to be way too many people and cars for me. Also, I can sell my house here, pay off the mortgage, and buy a brand new, larger house in New Mexico and still have money left over. Besides, we will be closer to the in-laws which makes my wife happy.
Well, off to start a new topic. [ January 11, 2004, 05:07 PM: Message edited by: DvdNimrod ]

Damn, I was afraid of that answer.
It has occured to me that some people look at the level of experience of some of the members and are intimidated, & don't want to look ..... (for lack of a better word) foolish.
That's not the case. Some of our best discussions are started by a rookie with a simple question. Anyway, glad you took the plunge.
See, it's not so hard, is it?
Good hunting. LB

DVD, I have a friend that lives in that neighborhood you are moving to. Loves to hunt; He works for Air-Products at the Intel plant there.
I can get you his e-mail if you want to get in touch with him.
As for the experience of the people on this board... if they knew everything, we wouldn't have boards like this to allow us ask questions, DEBATE new techniques and concepts, learn something new.
Ask away, as you most likely have knowledge that allows us to learn something new as well...
Good luck in your move

Like I tell my students/clients,"there is no such thing as a foolish question". If you dont ask, how can you get it answered? Steve

Besides if you listen real close you'll find that more experience is the opportunity to make more mistakes. I made some this weekend. Tyler too.

Perhaps I don't have enough experience in the coyote calling world to answer your questions but I do know for a fact that the only foolish question is the one that goes unasked...
There is a tremendous amount of experience floating around here - I'm expert at lookin' n' learnin...
Now I'm trying to remember Northern New Mexico - is that big rocks or big pines? Or did I really miss it?

There are coyotes and some prairie dogs in the Wagon Mound area. Unfortunately, it is mostly all private land. But it only takes permission on a couple 30-40,000 acre ranches to get a lot of hunting in.

Seems to me that when Sceery was on the Shade Tree and the Posse Country that he said he was driving a couple of hours from Santa Fe to shoot his coyotes. He never said which way, but I got the impression that it was to the east or the east-southeast.
